NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
The Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) and the Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) hosted the Seminar on Utilization of ICT for Official Statistics
The Seminar on Utilization of ICT for Official Statistics was held on December 13, 2019 in Chiba, and was organized by the SIAP and the SBJ. The seminar gathered about 60 participants from 25 countries/ regions and 6 international organizations, in conjunction with the Fourteenth Management Seminar for the Heads of National Statistical Offices in Asia and the Pacific which was held on December 11 and 12, 2019.
The Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, Mr. SHINDO Kanehiko made the opening remarks, followed by the keynote speech and five presentations.
The seminar provided an important opportunity for sharing experiences to utilize ICT for official statistics in Asia and Pacific countries. For the details of the seminar, please visit the website of the SBJ:

The 5th Statistical Delegation from Vietnam visited the Statistics Bureau of Japan
From December 4 to 8, 2019, the 5th Statistical Delegation from Vietnam, headed by Dr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director-General, General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO), came to Japan.
During the visit, they exchanged greetings with the Director-General of SBJ, gave presentations on ?Preparation for the 2021 Economic Census? and ?Tentative work plan for the 2021 Economic Census? and exchanged opinions on the progress and future efforts regarding the introduction of the online survey system to be used for the 2021 Economic Census with the SBJ staff.
The visit is based on the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between the GSO and the SBJ which was signed on January 14, 2015, to establish the basis for in-depth cooperation between the two sides in the area of official statistics and other related fields of mutual interest.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (October 2019)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 392,668 a decrease of 22,260 (5.4 %) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 172,605, a decrease of 13,732 (7.4 %) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 220,063, a decrease of 8,528 (3.7 %) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 346,967, a decrease of 21,741 (5.9 %) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 149,588, a decrease of 13,708 (8.4 %) from the previous year.

The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for October 2019 was 279,671 yen, down **4.8 % in nominal terms and down **5.1 % in real terms from the previous year. -
Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 536,075 yen, down **0.2 % in nominal terms and down **0.5 % in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 305,197 yen, down **4.9 % in nominal terms and down **5.2 % in real terms from the previous year.

Results of the Survey of Research and Development (2019)
- R&D Expenditure
Japan's total expenditure on R&D during fiscal year (FY) 2018 stood at 19.53 trillion yen, a 2.5 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. It increased for two consecutive years, the highest ever.
Expenditure on R&D as a percentage of GDP was 3.56 percent, a 0.08 percentage point increase from the previous fiscal year. - R&D Personnel
As of 31 March 2019, the total number of researchers is 874,800, a 0.9 percent increase from the previous year. It has increased for three consecutive years.
The number of female researchers (Head Count) is 155,000 and accounts for 16.6 percent of the total researchers. This figure is the highest ever. - Technology Balance of Payments
With regard to technology balance of payments by business enterprises, receipts from technology exports stood at 3.87 trillion yen, a decrease of 0.3 percent from the previous fiscal year. It decreased for the first time in two years.
