4. Household
The number of households was 49,566,305, increased of 5.3% from 2000.
- The number of households was 49,566,305, increased of 2,503,562, or 5.3%, compared with 2000.
- The number of private households was 49,062,530, increased of 2,280,147, or 4.9%, compared with 2000. The number of institutional households was 100,299, decreased of 1,329, or 1.3%, compare with 2000.

The number of one-person and two-person households had markedly increased, while the member per household had decreased to 2.55 persons.
- As for the increase rate of the number of private households by size of household in 2000-2005, one-person households had increased by 12.0%, two-person households by 10.9% and three-person households by 4.4%, while four and more person households had decreased. In addition, members per household had decreased from 2.67 in 2000 to 2.55 in 2005. (Fig. 7)
Households consisting of "a married couple only" had increased, while those consisting of "a married couple with their child(ren)" had decreased.
- As for the private households by family type of household, 28,393,707 were family nuclei (57.9% of the total number of private households), increased of 3.9% from 2000. Among family nuclei, 9,636,533 (19.6%) households consisting of "a married couple only", increased of 9.1% from 2000, and 14,645,655 (29.9%) consisting of "a married couple with their child(ren)", decreased of 1.8% compared with 2000. - Among private households, 14,457 (29.5%) were one-person households, increased of 12.0% from 2000.
Aged-single-persons were 3.86 million, increased of 27.5% from 2000. Aged-couple households were 4.49 million, increased of 22.6%.

- The number of private households with related members aged 65 years old and over was 17,204,473, which accounted for 35.1% of the total private households, increased 2,159,865 households, or 14.4% from 2000. Family nuclei was 8,414,948, which accounted for 48.9% of the private households with related members aged 65 years old and over, increased 23.8% from 2000. In addition, the number of aged-single-persons markedly increased by 27.5% to 3,864,778 (22.5%). The ratio of aged-single-persons to the population aged 65 years old and over had risen from 13.8% in 2000 to 15.1% in 2005.
- The number of family nuclei and "aged-single-persons" was rapidly increasing in private households with related members aged 65 years old and over. (Figs 9 and 10)
- The male aged-single-persons were 1,051,207, the female were 2,813,571 which were 2.7 times to male. The ratio of "aged-single-persons" to the population of those aged 65 years old and over was 9.7% for male and 19.0% for female, indicating the fact that one out of 10 male and one out of 5 female were living alone.
- There were 4,487,042 aged-couple households, accounting for 26.1% of the private households with related members aged 65 years old and over. The number of aged-couple households had increased by 825,771, or 22.6%, from 2000. (Fig. 10)
- The ratio of private households with related members aged 65 years old and over was highest in Yamagata-ken at 51.7%, followed by Akita-ken at 51.2% and Shimane-ken at 49.6%. In contrast, the ratio was lowest in Tokyo-to at 28.0%, followed by Kanagawa-ken at 28.4% and Okinawa-ken at 29.8%. (Fig. 11)
- The ratio of aged-single-persons to the population of those aged 65 years old and over was highest in Kagoshima-ken at 22.2%, followed by Tokyo-to at 21.7% and Osaka-fu at 20.9%. In contrast, the ratio was lowest in Yamagata-ken at 8.1%, followed by Niigata-ken at 9.2% and Fukui-ken at 9.7%.
- The ratio of aged-couple households to private households with related members aged 65 years old and over was highest in Hokkaido at 33.3%, followed by Kagoshima-ken at 33.2% and Miyazaki-ken at 30.9%. The ratio was lowest in Yamagata-ken at 16.6%, followed by Niigata-ken at 19.4% and Fukushima-ken at 19.5%.
