Preliminary Counts of the 2025 Population Census of Japan released
The Statistics Bureau of Japan released the Preliminary Counts of the 2025 Population Census of Japan on May 29, 2026.
The Population Census has been conducted every five years since 1920 and the 22nd Census was conducted in October 2025.
- Population of Japan
The total population of Japan as of October 1, 2025, was 123.05 million. Compared to 2020, the population of Japan decreased by 3.097 million (-2.5%), and the rate of decline accelerated.
- Population by prefecture
According to the population by prefecture in 2025, the population of Tokyo-to was largest (14.246 million). The population of the Tokyo metropolitan area, which consists of Tokyo-to, Kanagawa-ken, Saitama-ken and Chiba-ken, was 36.986 million, which accounts for about 30% (30.1%) of the population of Japan.
- Population by municipality
According to the population by municipality in 2025, the population decreased in 1,558 (90.6%) of the 1,719 municipalities in Japan.
- Households
The total number of households was 57.125 million, which increased by 1.294 million (2.3%) during the 2020-2025 period. The members per household was 2.15 and remained on a decline.
Hereafter, the release of the basic complete tabulation on population and households, results of the labour force status of population, industry and occupation of employed persons, place of work or schooling, internal migration and so on will follow in sequence.

Conducting of 2026 Economic Census for Business Activity
The SBJ and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry are conducting the Economic Census for Business Activity with June 1, 2026 as the reference date. The Economic Census for Business Activity aims to clarify the business activities of establishments and enterprises in Japan on both a national and regional level by comprehensively capturing accounting items such as sales (revenue) and expenses across all industrial sectors at the same point in time. Moreover, this survey also provides information on the population for various statistical surveys on establishments and enterprises.
[Release Dates]
The preliminary results will be released by the end of May 2027, and the detailed results will be released in sequence from September 2027.

The 3rd UK Statistical Delegation to Japan (May 2026)
The 3rd Statistical Delegation from the United Kingdom visited Japan from May 26 to 28, 2026.
They discussed several topics with the SBJ officials on "Social surveys," "Enterprise survey support project," "AI coding" and "Population Census."
The visit is based on the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between the United Kingdom Statistics Authority (UKSA) and SBJ, which was signed on May 17, 2023, to establish the basis for in depth cooperation between both sides in the area of official statistics.
