Implementation of Statistical Surveys Taking into Consideration Countermeasures against the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) conducts various statistical surveys with taking utmost care in preventing the COVID-19 infection.

2020 Population Census
This is the year of the Population Census, which is conducted every five years, and the SBJ and local governments are preparing for its implementation.
We plan to conduct the Census this autumn in a form where contact between surveyed household members and enumerators will be reduced as much as possible in order to prevent the occurrence and spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the safety and assurance of citizens and the enumerators.

Labour Force Survey, Family Income and Expenditure Survey, Retail Price Survey
The SBJ conducts the Labour Force Survey, the Family Income and Expenditure Survey, and the Retail Price Survey every month by the internet and other methods, while taking utmost care in preventing the COVID-19 infection.

Economic Conditions Survey, Unincorporated Enterprise Survey, Survey of Research and Development
The SBJ conducts the Economic Conditions Survey, the Unincorporated Enterprise Survey, and the Survey of Research and Development every year targeting enterprises, etc., while taking utmost care in preventing the COVID-19 infection and making more than enough consideration for the situation which the target entities are put in.

Population Estimates (December 1, 2019 (Final estimates), May 1, 2020 (Provisional estimates))
- As of December 1, 2019 (Final estimates)
- The total population was 126,144 thousand, a decrease of 291 thousand (0.23 %) from the previous year.
- The population under 15 years old was 15,174 thousand, a decrease of 213 thousand (1.38 %) from the previous year.
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,046 thousand, a decrease of 391 thousand (0.52 %) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 35,924 thousand, an increase of 313 thousand (0.88 %) from the previous year.

Japanese population was 123,646 thousand, a decrease of 499 thousand (0.40 %) from the previous year.

The consumer price index for Japan in April 2020 was 101.9 (2015=100), up 0.1 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.2 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (April 2020)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 764,186, a decrease of 2,835 (0.4 %) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 388,084, a decrease of 32,264 (7.7 %) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 376,102, an increase of 29,429 (8.5 %) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 703,617, a decrease of 1,565 (0.2 %) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 355,922, a decrease of 30,201 (7.8 %) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 347,695, an increase of 28,636 (9.0 %) from the previous year.

- The number of unemployed persons in April 2020 was 1.89 million, an increase of 130 thousand from the previous year.

The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for April 2020 was 267,922 yen, down 11.0 % in nominal terms and down 11.1 % in real terms from the previous year. -
Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 303,621 yen, down 9.9 % in nominal terms and down 10.0 % in real terms from the previous year.
The average of monthly income per household stood at 531,017 yen, up 1.0 % in nominal terms and up 0.9 % in real terms from the previous year.
