NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure 2019

The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) is conducting the National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure 2019 from October through November in 2019. The purpose of this survey is to comprehensively grasp the actual situation of income, expenditure, assets, and liabilities in households, and to clarify the distribution of household income and the level and structure of expenditure nationally and regionally.

The results of the survey are expected to be utilized by national and local governments for important administrative policies such as examination of the amounts of national and welfare pensions, and examination of standards for calculating the nursing insurance premium.

The results of the 2019 survey will be released after November 2020.

The consumer price index for Japan in September 2019 was 101.9 (2015=100), up 0.2 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and the same level as the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The total population was 126.14 million, a decrease of 0.30 million (0.24 percent) from the previous year.

- As of May 1, 2019(Final estimates)

The total population was 126,181 thousand, a decrease of 285 thousand (0.23 percent) from the previous year.
The population under 15 years old was 15,292 thousand, a decrease of 201 thousand (1.30 percent) from the previous year.
The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,114 thousand, a decrease of 443 thousand (0.59 percent) from the previous year.
The population aged 65 and over was 35,775 thousand, an increase of 359 thousand (1.01 percent) from the previous year.

Japanese population was 123,900 thousand, a decrease of 454 thousand (0.37 percent) from the previous year.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (September 2019)

The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 372,471 an increase of 40,753 (12.3 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 167,994, an increase of 20,232 (13.7 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 204,477, an increase of 20,521 (11.2 %) from the previous year.
The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 330,044, an increase of 35,028 (11.9 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 146,399, an increase of 17,108 (13.2 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 183,645, an increase of 17,920 (10.8 %) from the previous year.

The number of employed persons in September 2019 was 67.68 million, an increase of 530 thousand or 0.8 % from the previous year.
The number of unemployed persons in September 2019 was 1.68 million, an increase of 60 thousand or 3.7 % from the previous year.
The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.4 %.

The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for September 2019 was 300,609 yen, up **9.8 % in nominal terms and up **9.5 % in real terms from the previous year.
Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 457,427 yen, down **0.1 % in nominal terms and down **0.4 % in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 329,655 yen, up **8.0 % in nominal terms and up **7.7 % in real terms from the previous year.
