NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Headquarters for Implementation of the 2020 Population Census has started up

  The 2020 Population Census scheduled as of October 1, 2020, is the most fundamental and important statistical survey to enumerate all the persons living in Japan. The results of the Census are the most important socioeconomic information source, and they are expected to provide indispensable statistical information for various policymaking.
  The 2020 Population Census marks the 100th anniversary since the first survey in 1920.

  The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), to which the Statistics Bureau belongs, started up ?the Headquarters for Implementation of the 2020 Population Census? headed by the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications. This Headquarters facilitates the smooth and proper implementation of the Census, and provision of accurate and useful data to the public.

  The Headquarters consists of the executives of the MIC including the Minister, State Ministers, Parliamentary Vice-Ministers and all Directors-General of the bureaus of the MIC.

  Its main functions are as follows:

  1. To facilitate the smooth and proper implementation of the Census,
  2. To ensure cooperation for the Census and to promote comprehensive publicity, and
  3. To disseminate the Census results.

"Population Estimates" (April 1, 2019 (Final estimates), September 1, 2019 (Provisional estimates))

- As of September 1, 2019 (Provisional estimates)

<Total Population>

  • The total population was 126.15 million, a decrease of 0.27 million (0.21 percent) from the previous year.

- As of April 1, 2019(Final estimates)

<Total Population>

  • The total population was 126,254 thousand, a decrease of 248 thousand (0.20 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population under 15 years old was 15,320 thousand, a decrease of 196 thousand (1.27 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,181 thousand, a decrease of 428 thousand (0.57 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 65 and over was 35,752 thousand, an increase of 376 thousand (1.06 percent) from the previous year.

  • Japanese population was 123,960 thousand, a decrease of 453 thousand (0.36 percent) from the previous year.

Consumer Price Index (2015-base) (August 2019, Japan)

  • The consumer price index for Japan in August 2019 was 101.8 (2015=100), up 0.3 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and the same level as the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (August 2019)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 378,793 a decrease of 12,712 (3.2 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 173,502, a decrease of 4,522 (2.5 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 205,291, a decrease of 8,190 (3.8 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 341,164, a decrease of 11,828 (3.4 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 153,663, a decrease of 4,669 (2.9 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 187,501, a decrease of 7,159 (3.7 %) from the previous year.

  • The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in September 2019 (preliminary) was 101.8 (2015=100), up 0.4 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.1 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

2018 Housing and Land Survey (Basic Tabulation on Dwellings and Households)

  • The number of total dwellings was 62.407 million, an increase of 1.779 million (2.9 %), compared with 2013. The number of dwellings per household was 1.16.
  • The number of vacant dwellings was 8.489 million, an increase of 0.293 million (3.6 %), compared with 2013. The percentage of vacant dwellings rose to 13.6 %, which marked a record high.

"Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation)"(August 2019)

  • The number of employed persons in August 2019 was 67.51 million, an increase of 690 thousand or 1.0 % from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in August 2019 was 1.57 million, a decrease of 130 thousand or 7.6 % from the previous year.
  • The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.2 %.

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households
    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for August 2019 was 296,327 yen, up **1.3 % in nominal terms and up **1.0 % in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
    The average of monthly income per household stood at 521,571 yen, down **1.8 % in nominal terms and down **2.1 % in real terms from the previous year.
    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 325,516 yen, up **1.7 % in nominal terms and up **1.4 % in real terms from the previous year.
