New Director-General of the Statistics Bureau

News Bulletin No.297 A Picture of New Director-General of the Statistics Bureau

  On July 5, 2019, Mr. SAIKI Shuji was appointed as Director-General of the Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ), succeeding Mr. CHINO Masato.

  In his career, Mr. SAIKI had been engaged in statistical related activities as Deputy Director-General for Statistics in the Minister's Secretariat, SBJ, from April 2016 to July 2017. Furthermore, he had served as Director-General, Statistical Survey Department, SBJ, from July 2017 to July 2019.

  • The total population was 126.23 million, a decrease of 0.28 million (0.22 percent) from the previous year.

  • The total population was 126,317 thousand, a decrease of 275 thousand (0.22 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population under 15 years old was 15,376 thousand, a decrease of 181 thousand (1.16 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,317 thousand, a decrease of 490 thousand (0.65 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 65 and over was 35,624 thousand, an increase of 396 thousand (1.12 percent) from the previous year.

  • Japanese population was 124,194 thousand, a decrease of 436 thousand (0.35 percent) from the previous year.

  • The consumer price index for Japan in May 2019 was 101.8 (2015=100), up 0.7 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and the same level as the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (May 2019)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 418,489, a decrease of 2,250 (0.5 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 191,005, a decrease of 1,658 (0.9 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 227,484, a decrease of 592 (0.3 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 377,454, a decrease of 6,901 (1.8 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 169,544, a decrease of 5,223 (3.0 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 207,910 a decrease of 1,678 (0.8 %) from the previous year.

Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation) (May 2019)

  • The number of employed persons in May 2019 was 67.32 million, an increase of 340 thousand or 0.5 % from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in May 2019 was 1.65 million, an increase of 70 thousand or 4.4 % from the previous year.

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for May 2019 was 300,901 yen, up **4.9 % in nominal terms and up **4.0 % in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
    The average of monthly income per household stood at 457,376 yen, up **0.7 % in nominal terms and down **0.2 % in real terms from the previous year.
    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 332,273 yen, up **2.3 % in nominal terms and up **1.4 % in real terms from the previous year.

Unincorporated Enterprise Survey (Structural survey) 2018 Yearly

  • The sales per establishment of ?Manufacturing? were 9,792,000 yen; ?Wholesale and retail trade,? 14,478,000 yen; ?Accommodations and food services,? 8,781,000 yen; and ?Services,? 5,133,000 yen. From the previous year, the sales per establishment increased by 4.8 % in ?Manufacturing? and 4.1 % in ?Services,? and decreased by 11.2 % in ?Wholesale and retail trade? and 6.6 % in ?Accommodations and food services.?
  • The rate of establishments with the business proprietor aged 70 and over was 49.9 % in ?Manufacturing,? 48.8 % in ?Wholesale and retail trade,? 41.0 % in ?Accommodations and food services,? and 36.3 % in ?Services.?
