NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) will conduct the Economic Census for Business Frame 2019

  The SBJ will conduct the Economic Census for Business Frame from June 2019. Objectives of the Economic Census for Business Frame are to identify the basic structure such as the status of establishments in all industries on a national and regional level, and to organize information on the population for conducting various statistical surveys on establishments and enterprises.

Coverage of the survey

(1) Survey for privately owned establishments

       All establishments in Japan excluding the establishments of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, etc.

(2) Survey for national and local governments

       Establishments of national and local governments

Major survey items

(1) Survey for privately owned establishments

       All establishments: Name, location, status of establishments
       Newly grasped establishments: Number of persons engaged, main business activity,corporate number, annual total sales (income), etc.

(2) Survey for national and local governments

       All establishments: Name, location, status of establishments
       Newly grasped establishments: Number of persons engaged, main business activity, etc.

Census Date

(1) Survey for privately owned establishments

       The survey will be conducted between June 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020.

(2) Survey for national and local governments

       The survey will be conducted as of June 1, 2019.

Method of the Survey

(1) Survey for privately owned establishments

       An enumerator will confirm the status of establishments for every establishment within his/her enumeration district by checking their appearance and then input the results into ?the tablet terminals for enumerators,? as well as distributing questionnaires to newly grasped establishments. Response to the survey will be conducted online or by mail.

(2) Survey for national and local governments

      ?The questionnaires for national and local governments? will be distributed to every establishment by email. Response to the survey will be conducted online.

  • The total population was 126,453 thousand, a decrease of 261 thousand (0.21 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population under 15 years old was 15,399 thousand, a decrease of 176 thousand (1.13 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,458 thousand, a decrease of 491 thousand (0.65 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 65 and over was 35,596 thousand, an increase of 406 thousand (1.15 percent) from the previous year.

  • Japanese population was 124,182 thousand, a decrease of 432 thousand (0.35 percent) from the previous year.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (March 2019)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 910,007, a decrease of 3,548 (0.4 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 493,604, a decrease of 2,226 (0.4 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 416,403, a decrease of 1,322 (0.3 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 849,869, a decrease of 10,238 (1.2 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 463,604, a decrease of 5,989 (1.3 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 416,403, a decrease of 4,249 (1.1 %) from the previous year.

  • The number of employed persons in March 2019 was 66.87 million, an increase of 670 thousand or 1.0 % from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in March 2019 was 1.74 million, an increase of 10 thousand or 0.6 % from the previous year.
  • The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.5 %.
