NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) published the Japan Statistical Yearbook 2019

  The Japan Statistical Yearbook is the comprehensive and systematic summary of basic statistical information of Japan covering wide-ranging fields such as Land, Population, Economy, Society, Culture, and so on.

  The yearbook covers all fields of statistics published by government and private organizations.

  This volume contains 30 fields, 540 tables, including outline of the survey and explanation of terms.

  There are English translations in the statistical tables of the Yearbook, so it is useful to introduce information on Japan.

Results of the Survey of Research and Development (2018)

  • R&D Expenditure

      Japan's total expenditure on R&D during fiscal year (FY) 2017 stood at 19.05 trillion yen, a 3.4 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. It increased for the first time in three years, the highest ever.
      Expenditure on R&D as a percentage of GDP was 3.48 percent, a 0.05 percentage point increase from the previous fiscal year.

  • R&D Personnel

      As of 31 March 2018, the total number of researchers is 867,000, a 1.6 percent increase from the previous year. It has increased for two years consecutive years.
      The number of female researchers (Head Count) is 150,500 and accounts for 16.2 percent of the total researchers. This figure is the highest ever.

  • Technology Balance of Payments

      With regard to technology balance of payments by business enterprises during fiscal year (FY) 2017, receipts from technology exports stood at 3.88 trillion yen, an 8.7 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. It increased for the first time in two years.

  • The total population was 126.42 million, a decrease of 0.27 million (0.22 percent) from the previous year.

- As of July 1, 2018 (Final estimates)

<Total Population>

  • The total population was 126,529 thousand, a decrease of 257 thousand (0.20 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population under 15 years old was 15,486 thousand, a decrease of 178 thousand (1.14 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,572 thousand, a decrease of 534 thousand (0.70 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 65 and over was 35,471 thousand, an increase of 455 thousand (1.30 percent) from the previous year.

  • Japanese population was 124,349 thousand, a decrease of 414 thousand (0.33 percent) from the previous year.

  • The consumer price index for Japan in November 2018 was 101.8 (2015=100), up 0.8 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.2 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (November 2018)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 351,216 an increase of 9,391 (2.7 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 144,117, an increase of 5,327 (3.8 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 207,099, an increase of 4,064 (2.0 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 313,252, an increase of 5,391 (1.8 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 124,295, an increase of 2,529 (2.1 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 188,957, an increase of 2,862 (1.5 %) from the previous year.

  • Monthly sales: 31.9 trillion yen, up 3.1 % over the year.
  • Number of persons working at the Location of Establishment: 30.69 million persons, up 0.6 % over the year.

"Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation)" (November 2018)

  • The number of employed persons in November 2018 was 67.09 million, an increase of 1.57 million or 2.4 % from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in November 2018 was 1.68 million, a decrease of 100 thousand or 5.6 % from the previous year.
  • The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.5 %.

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for November 2018 was 281,041 yen, up **0.4 % in nominal terms and down **0.6 % in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 455,644 yen, up **1.1 % in nominal terms and up **0.1 % in real terms from the previous year.
