NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) co-hosted the Seventh Global Forum on Gender Statistics together with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD)

The Seventh Global Forum on Gender Statistics, organized by MIC and UNSD under the guidance of the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Gender Statistics, was held in Tokyo for the first time in East Asia from 14 to 16 November 2018.

The event brought together over 160 producers and users of gender statistics from national statistical offices, other governmental and international agencies, academia, civil society and the donor community.

The State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, Mr. Junji Suzuki made the opening remarks, followed by welcome video messages from Mr. Stefan Schweinfest, Director, UNSD.

The Forum provided a platform to discuss the way forward to improve data and evidence for gender policies given the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The consumer price index for Japan in September 2018 was 101.7 (2015=100), up 1.2 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and the same level as the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

- As of October 1, 2018 (Provisional estimates)

The total population was 126.44 million, a decrease of 0.26 million (0.21 percent) from the previous year.

- As of May 1, 2018 (Final estimates)

The total population was 126,466 thousand, a decrease of 258 thousand (0.20 percent) from the previous year.
The population under 15 years old was 15,493 thousand, a decrease of 181 thousand (1.15 percent) from the previous year.
The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,557 thousand, a decrease of 546 thousand (0.72 percent) from the previous year.
The population aged 65 and over was 35,416 thousand, an increase of 468 thousand (1.34 percent) from the previous year.

Japanese population was 124,354 thousand, a decrease of 403 thousand (0.32 percent) from the previous year.

The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in October 2018 (preliminary) was 101.7 (2015=100), up 1.5 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.1 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (September 2018)

The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 331,718 a decrease of 13,159 (3.8 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 147,762, a decrease of 6,029 (3.9 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 183,956, a decrease of 7,130 (3.7 %) from the previous year.
The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 295,016, a decrease of 15,331 (4.9 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 129,291, a decrease of 6,984 (5.1 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 165,725, a decrease of 8,347 (4.8 %) from the previous year.

The number of employed persons in September 2018 was 67.15 million, an increase of 1.19 million or 1.8 % from the previous year.
The number of unemployed persons in September 2018 was 1.62 million, a decrease of 280 thousand or 14.7 % from the previous year.
The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.3 %.
