The definitive results of the 2016 Economic Census for Business Activity released
On 28 June 2018, the SBJ and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) released the definitive results of the 2016 Economic Census for Business Activity.
The objectives of the Economic Census for Business Activity are, by comprehensively investigating the accounting items such as sales (income) and costs, etc. in all industrial fields in Japan at the same point in time, to identify the structures of establishments and enterprises in all industries on a national and regional level, and to obtain basic information for conducting various statistical surveys on establishments and enterprises.
As for this survey, accounting matters, including the amount of sales (income) (hereinafter referred to as ?sales?) and expenses, are the values for the year 2015, whereas matters other than accounting matters, including the number of establishments, ?enterprises, etc.? and persons engaged, are the values as of June 1, 2016.
- The amount of sales in Japan was 1624.7143 trillion yen (up by 21.7% from 2011), and that of added value was 289.5355 trillion yen (up by 18.3%).
- As of June 1, 2016, the number of ?enterprises, etc? in Japan was 3,856,457 (down by 6.6% from February 1, 2012). The number of establishments was 5,578,975 (down by 3.3%), and the number of persons engaged was 56,873 thousand (up by 1.9%).
- Looking at sales by industrial division, the largest were for ?Wholesale and retail trade? at 500.7943 trillion yen (30.8% of all industries), followed by ?Manufacturing? at 396.2754 trillion yen (24.4%), and ?Finance and insurance? at 125.1303 trillion yen (7.7%), resulting in the top three industries accounting for over 60% of all industries. The sales arising from ?Tertiary industries? accounted for 68.5% of all industries.
- Looking at the amount of added value by industrial division, the amount was the largest for ?Manufacturing? at 68.7891 trillion yen (23.8% of all industries), followed by ?Wholesale and retail trade? at 54.1633 trillion yen (18.7%), and ?Construction? at 20.8207 trillion yen (7.2%), resulting in the top three industries accounting for under 50% of all industries. The added value arising from ?Tertiary industries? accounted for 68.4% of all industries.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (May 2018)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 420,739, an increase of 15,584 (3.8 %) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 192,663, an increase of 7,596 (4.1 %) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 228,076, an increase of 7,988 (3.6 %) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 384,355, an increase of 13,520 (3.6 %) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 174,767, an increase of 6,692 (4.0 %) from the previous year.

The average of monthly income per household stood at 439,089 yen, up **0.5 % in nominal terms and down **0.3 % in real terms from the previous year.

Unincorporated Enterprise Survey (Structural survey) 2017 Yearly
- The sales per establishment of "Manufacturing" were 9,345,000 yen; "Wholesale and retail trade," 16,296,000 yen; "Accommodations and food services," 9,405,000 yen; and "Services," 4,932,000 yen. From the previous year, the sales per establishment increased by 9.4 % in "Wholesale and retail trade" and 10.2 % in "Accommodations and food services", and decreased by 10.7 % in "Manufacturing" and 2.6 % in "Services."
- The rate of establishments with the business proprietor aged 60 and over was 79.6 % in "Manufacturing," 73.2 % in "Wholesale and retail trade," 66.7 % in "Accommodations and food services," and 61.4 % in "Services."
