Overseas promotion of Statistics ICT System

In February 2018, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) prepared ?Open Up a New World Together,? a casebook of MIC?s collaborations around the world, which comprehensively summarizes case examples of international collaborations that contribute to resolving issues throughout the world.

The Statistics Bureau of MIC contributes to the advanced production and dissemination of statistics of other countries by facilitating the overseas expansion of the statistics ICT system called ?e-Stat lite? based on Japan?s current systems such as the online survey system that highly interest foreign countries.

"Current Population Estimates"(As of October 1st, 2017)

The total population was 126,706 thousand, a decrease of 227 thousand compared with the previous year. The total population decreased for the seventh year in a row.
The migration change of the Japanese population was positive for the first time in seven years, and that of the foreign population was positive for five consecutive years.
The population aged 65 years old and over was 35,152 thousand (27.7 percent of the total population).

"Population Estimates"(November 1, 2017(Final estimates), April 1, 2018(Provisional estimates))

- As of April 1, 2018 (Provisional estimates)

The total population was 126.53 million, a decrease of 0.23 million (0.18 percent) from the previous year.

- As of November 1, 2017 (Final estimates)

The total population was 126,714 thousand, a decrease of 223 thousand (0.18 percent) from the previous year.
The population under 15 years old was 15,575 thousand, a decrease of 185 thousand (1.17 percent) from the previous year.
The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,949 thousand, a decrease of 596 thousand (0.78 percent) from the previous year.
The population aged 65 and over was 35,190 thousand, an increase of 558 thousand (1.61 percent) from the previous year.

Japanese population was 124,614 thousand, a decrease of 375 thousand (0.30 percent) from the previous year.

Consumer Price Index (2015-base) (March 2018, Japan)

The consumer price index for Japan in March 2018 was 101.0 (2015=100), up 1.1 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.4 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (March 2018)

The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 913,555, a decrease of 45,221 (4.7 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 495,830, a decrease of 16,946 (3.3 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 417,725, a decrease of 28,275 (6.3 %) from the previous year.
The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 860,107, a decrease of 45,482 (5.0 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 466,134, a decrease of 17,617 (3.6 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 393,973, a decrease of 27,865 (6.6 %) from the previous year.

The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in April 2018 (preliminary) was 100.4 (2015=100), up 0.5 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.4 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

"Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation)"(March 2018)

The number of employed persons in March 2018 was 66.20 million, an increase of 1.87 million or 2.9 % from the previous year.
The number of unemployed persons in March 2018 was 1.73 million, a decrease of 150 thousand or 8.0 % from the previous year.
The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.5 %.

Average expenditure on goods and services ordered over the internet was 12,038 yen (up 8.1 % in nominal terms).

Travel-related costs: up 11.2 % in nominal terms
Clothing, footwear: up 23.3 % in nominal terms
Tickets: up 25.9 % in nominal terms
Cosmetics: up 17.3 % in nominal terms

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households: March 2018)

Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households
The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for March 2018 was 301,230 yen, up **0.6 % in nominal terms and down **0.7 % in real terms from the previous year.
Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 453,676 yen, down **2.6 % in nominal terms and down **3.8 % in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 334,998 yen, down **0.6 % in nominal terms and down **1.9 % in real terms from the previous year.
