NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

Establishment of the Statistical Data Utilization Center

  The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the National Statistics Center opened the Statistical Data Utilization Center in Wakayama Prefecture on April 1, 2018.

  As a hub for advanced data utilization, the Center offers micro data to enable sophisticated data analysis by the use of ICT, promotes data utilization contributing to evidence-based policy making and development of data science, and fosters personnel with required expertise, in collaboration with Wakayama Prefecture, thus effectively facilitating statistical data utilization with the aim of vitalizing local communities.

• The total population was 126.52 million, a decrease of 0.23 million (0.18 percent) from the previous year.

- As of October 1, 2017 (Final estimates)

<Total Population>

• The total population was 126,706 thousand, a decrease of 227 thousand (0.18 percent) from the previous year.
• The population under 15 years old was 15,592 thousand, a decrease of 188 thousand (1.19 percent) from the previous year.
• The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,962 thousand, a decrease of 600 thousand (0.78 percent) from the previous year.
• The population aged 65 and over was 35,152 thousand, an increase of 561 thousand (1.62 percent) from the previous year.

• Japanese population was 124,648 thousand, a decrease of 372 thousand (0.30 percent) from the previous year.

• The consumer price index for Japan in February 2018 was 101.3 (2015=100), up 1.5% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.1% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (February 2018)

• The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 360,501, an increase of 5,034 (1.4 %) from the previous year.
• The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 155,111, an increase of 2,251 (1.5 %) from the previous year.
• The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 205,390, an increase of 2,783 (1.4 %) from the previous year.
• The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 327,575, a decrease of 572 (0.2 %) from the previous year.
• The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 138,017, a decrease of 1,202 (0.9 %) from the previous year.

• The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 189,558, an increase of 630 (0.3 %) from the previous year.

• The number of employed persons in February 2018 was 65.78 million, an increase of 1.51 million or 2.3 % from the previous year.
• The number of unemployed persons in February 2018 was 1.66 million, a decrease of 220 thousand or 11.7 % from the previous year.

• Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households
  The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for February 2018 was 265,614 yen, up **0.9 % in nominal terms and down **0.9 % in real terms from the previous year.

• Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households
  The average of monthly income per household stood at 503,989 yen, down **0.6% in nominal terms and down **2.4 % in real terms from the previous year.
  The average of consumption expenditures per household was 289,177 yen, down **4.6 % in nominal terms and down **6.3 % in real terms from the previous year.
