NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), and the Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) and the Statistical Research and Training Institute of Japan (SRTI) hosted the Seminar on Statistical Capacity Building for New Data Sources

  The Seminar on Statistical Capacity Building for New Data Sources was held on 8 December 2017 in Tokyo, and was organized by the SIAP, the SBJ and the SRTI. The seminar gathered 48 participants from 24 countries/ regions and 5 international organizations, in conjunction with the Thirteenth Management Seminar for the Heads of National Statistical Offices in Asia and the Pacific which was held on 6 and 7 December 2017.

  The seminar started with a welcome message by Mr. Toshihiko WAKO, Vice-Minister for Policy Coordination, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC). The participants engaged in lively discussions during the seminar which consisted of one keynote speech, two general sessions and one panel discussion.

  The seminar provided an important opportunity for sharing experience and challenges for statistical capacity building for the development of production and dissemination of official statistics with new data sources.

"Survey of Household Economy" (Items Related to Expenditure) (October 2017)

- Summary Results of the October 2017 Survey of Household Economy (Items Related to Expenditure) (Two-or-more-person households)

- Change over the year of Monthly Expenditure per household on Main Items

[Main Items increased in real terms]

  • Video Game hardware (excluding software): up 165.2 % in nominal terms and 166.0 % in real terms
  • Water supply and drainage construction costs: up 100.7 % in nominal terms and 98.1 % in real terms
  • Automobiles (second-hand): up 72.0 % in nominal terms and 71.8 % in real terms

  • Women's one-piece dresses and suits: down 26.1 % in nominal terms and 25.4 % in real terms
  • Package tour costs (domestic): down 22.8 % in nominal terms and 24.4 % in real terms

Results of the Survey of Research and Development (2017)

  • R&D Expenditure

      Japan's total expenditure on R&D during fiscal year (FY) 2016 stood at 18.43 trillion yen, a 2.7 percent decrease from the previous fiscal year. It has decreased for two consecutive years.
      Expenditure on R&D as a percentage of GDP was 3.42 percent, a 0.13 percentage point decrease from the previous fiscal year.

  • R&D Personnel

      As of 31 March 2017, the total number of researchers is 853,700, a 0.8 percent increase from the previous year. The number of researchers increased for the first time in two years.
      The number of female researchers (Head Count) is 144,100 and accounts for 15.7 percent of the total researchers. This figure is the highest ever.

  • Technology Balance of Payments

      With regard to technology balance of payments by business enterprises, receipts from technology exports stood at 3.57 trillion yen, a decrease of 9.6 percent from the previous fiscal year. It dropped for the first time in five years.

  • The total population was 126.70 million, a decrease of 0.22 million (0.17 percent) from the previous year.

  • The total population was 126,786 thousand, a decrease of 209 thousand (0.16 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population under 15 years old was 15,664 thousand, a decrease of 184 thousand (1.16 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 15 to 64 was 76,106 thousand, a decrease of 605 thousand (0.79 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 65 and over was 35,016 thousand, an increase of 580 thousand (1.69 percent) from the previous year.

  • Japanese population was 124,763 thousand, a decrease of 354 thousand (0.28 percent) from the previous year.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (November 2017)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 341,825, an increase of 2,802 (0.8 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 138,790, an increase of 2,515 (1.8 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 203,035, an increase of 287 (0.1 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 307,861, a decrease of 2,859 (0.9 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 121,766, a decrease of 722 (0.6 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 186,095, a decrease of 2,137 (1.1 %) from the previous year.

"Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation)" (November 2017)

  • The number of employed persons in November 2017 was 65.52 million, an increase of 750 thousand or 1.2 % from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in November 2017 was 1.78 million, a decrease of 190 thousand or 9.6 % from the previous year.
  • The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.7 %.

Consumer Price Index (2015-base) (Japan November 2017, Ku-area of Tokyo December 2017(preliminary))

  • The consumer price index for Japan in November 2017 was 100.9 (2015=100), up 0.6% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.7 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
  • The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in December 2017 (preliminary) was 100.8 (2015=100), up 1.0% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.3 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households: November 2017)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for November 2017 was 277,361 yen, up 2.4 % in nominal terms and up 1.7 % in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 443,186 yen, up 2.5 % in nominal terms and up 1.8 % in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 301,164 yen, up 2.4 % in nominal terms and up 1.7 % in real terms from the previous year.
