2. Income

The regional differentials in household income by prefecture in all households was analyzed using the standard deviation based on the index where the national average was 100. After narrowing from 11.9 in 1959 to 7.0 in 1969 and staying at low levels of 7.5 in 1974 and 7.2 in 1979, the standard deviation widened to 9.0 in 1984 and 10.1 in 1989. Thereafter, it contracted again to 9.1 in 1994, 9.0 in 1999 and 7.9 in 2004. (Table VI-3)
