3 Industry

"Services" show the highest growth in number of employed persons.

- A breakdown of the number of employed persons by sector of three industries showed that there were 3,172,509 persons in the primary industry sector (5.0 percent of employed persons); 18,571,057 in the secondary industry sector (29.5 percent), and 40,484,679 (64.3 percent) in the tertiary industry sector. The ratio of those employed in the tertiary industry sector continues to show a consistent rise.

- A breakdown of the number of employed persons by Industry (major groups) reveals that "Services" had the highest number of people employed at 17,263,876 (27.4 percent of employed persons), followed by "Wholesale and retail trade, and eating and drinking places" at 14,318,544 (22.7 percent), and "Manufacturing" at 12,227,685 (19.4 percent). In comparison with 1995, "Services" showed the highest increase, by 1,331,386 (8.4 percent), followed by an increase in "Real estate" by 40,054 (5.7 percent), and a rise in "Transport and communications" by 12,170 (0.3 percent). On the other hand, the greatest decline was in "Manufacturing" - by 1,328,568 (9.8percent), followed by a decrease in "Agriculture" of 574,238 and likewise in "Construction" of 340,813 (5.1 percent).

- A breakdown of the ratio of employed persons by Industry (major groups) and sex showed that "Services" had the highest ratio of female workers (52.3 percent), followed by "Finance and insurance" (51.8 percent) and "Wholesale and retail trade, and eating and drinking places" (50.9 percent).

- A breakdown of the ratio of employed persons by Industry (major groups) and prefecture showed that Okinawa-ken had the highest ratio in "Services" (33.4 percent). The highest ratio working in "Wholesale and retail trade, and eating and drinking places" was in Osaka-fu (26.2 percent), while the highest ratio in "Manufacturing" was seen in Shiga-ken (30.3 percent).
