2 Employment Status

The ratio of employees continues to grow.

- A breakdown of the number of employed persons by employment status showed there to be 52,280,537 employees (including directors) (83.0 percent of employed persons); 7,185,866 self-employed persons (including "Persons doing home handicraft") (11.4 percent), and 3,506,959 family workers (5.6 percent). The ratio of employees among employed persons has continued to grow.

- A breakdown of the ratio of employed persons by employment status and age group shows that the ratio of employees for both sexes continues to decline with advancing age. For those aged 65 and over, the highest ratio is seen in the category of self-employed persons for males and of family workers for females.

- In a breakdown of the ratio of employed persons by employment status and prefecture, the highest ratios were seen in Kanagawa-ken in the category of employees (89.0 percent), in Wakayama-ken in the category of self-employed persons (16.6 percent), and in Aomori-ken in the category of family workers (9.8 percent).
