IV Means of Transportation Used
The ratio of users of private cars only has risen.
- A breakdown according to the means of transportation used of commuting employed persons and persons attending schools (going out of homes) aged 15 and over shows the users of private cars only to have the highest ratio at 27.51 million (44.3 percent of the number of commuting employed persons and persons attending schools), followed by users of railways and trains only at 8.67 million (14.0 percent), while 7.51 million used bicycles only (12.1 percent).
Compared with ten years previously in 1990, the ratio of "private cars only" increased 7.1 percentage points, while that of "walking only" declined 3.0 percentage points, that of "buses only" 1.6 percentage points, and "motor cycles" down 1.2 percentage points. (Table 4-1)
- Viewed by prefecture, Yamagata-ken had the highest ratio of users of private cars only at 72.4 percent, followed by Toyama-ken at 72.0 percent and Gumma-ken at 71.0 percent, with 37 prefectures showing ratios of 50 percent or over. On the other hand, Tokyo-to had the lowest ratio at 11.6 percent, followed by Osaka-fu at 21.7 percent and Kanagawa-ken at 22.1 percent. The ratio in eight prefectures including these three prefectures is below the national average (44.3 percent). (Table 4-2)
