II-5 Mergers and Separations after October 2, 2001

The number of mergers stood at 12,000 enterprises, while that of separations stood at 4,000.

Among the enterprises that existed as of October 1, 2006, the number of new enterprises established by consolidation after October 2, 2001 stood at about 600, that of enterprises which merged with other companies stood at 12,000, and that of new enterprises established by split-up or breakup stood at 4,000.

By major industrial group, the number of all cases was the highest in "Wholesale and Retail Trade," that of new consolidations or split-up/breakup was high in "Services, N.E.C." and "Manufacturing," and that of mergers was high in "Manufacturing" and "Services, N.E.C."

Compared with 2001, the number of enterprises which merged with other companies increased, while that of new enterprises established by consolidation or split-up/breakup decreased (Table II-7).
