II-4 Parent Company, Subsidiary Company, etc.
The number of enterprises having a parent company and that of enterprises owning a subsidiary company both decreased.
The number of enterprises having a parent company stood at 64,000 (4.2 of the total of enterprises), that of enterprises having an affiliated company (owning voting rights) stood at 40,000 (2.6 %), that of enterprises having a subsidiary company stood at 41,000 (2.7 %), and that of enterprises having an affiliated company (voting rights owned) stood at 34,000 (2.3 %).
Compared with 2001, the number of enterprises having a parent company decreased by 12.3 %, that of enterprises having an affiliated company (owning voting rights) decreased by 5.9 %, that of enterprises having a subsidiary company decreased by 8.0 %, and that of enterprises having an affiliated company (voting rights owned) also decreased by 14.8 %.
On the other hand, the number of enterprises having an overseas parent company and that of enterprises having an overseas subsidiary company both substantially increased by 21.2 % and 35.1 %, respectively (Table II-5).

Around half of the enterprises having an overseas parent company were in "Wholesale and Retail Trade," and around half of the enterprises having an overseas subsidiary company were in "Manufacturing."
The number of enterprises having an overseas parent company by major industrial group was the highest in "Wholesale and Retail Trade" (49.0 % of enterprises having an overseas parent company in total), followed by "Manufacturing" (16.5 %), "Services, N.E.C." (12.5 %), and others.
The number of enterprises having an overseas subsidiary company by major industrial group was the highest in "Manufacturing" (49.7 % of enterprises having an overseas subsidiary company in total), followed by "Wholesale and Retail Trade" (26.2 %), "Services, N.E.C." (6.5 %), and others (Table II-6, Fig. II-3).
