I-5 By Employment Status
The number of "those other than full-time employees" and "temporary employees" substantially increased.
By employment status in private establishments of non-agriculture, forestry and fisheries, the number of "employees" was 46,584,000 (86.4 % of the total persons engaged), that of "salaried directors" was 3,887,000 (7.2 %), and that of "individual proprietors" or "unpaid family workers" was 3,476,000 (6.4 %).
Among "employees," the number of "full-time employees" was 29,054,000 (62.4 % of the total employees), that of "those other than full-time employees" such as part-timers was 15,927,000 (34.2 %), and that of "temporary employees" such as daily workers was 1,603,000 (3.4 %).
Compared with 2001, the number of "individual proprietors" or "unpaid family workers" decreased by 13.9 % in total, and that of "salaried directors" also decreased by 5.1 %. On the other hand, the number of "employees" increased by 0.1 %. Among these, the number of "full-time employees" decreased by 5.3 %, while that of "those other than full-time employees" and "temporary employees" increased by 11.1 % and 5.8 %, respectively (Table I-23).

The number of part-timers was larger than that of "full-time employees" among females.
Concerning the employment status by sex, the number of males in "full-time employees" was 20,016,000 (76.7 % of the total male employees), which was much larger than that of "those other than full-time employees", 5,301,000 (20.3 %). On the other hand, the number of females in "those other than full-time employees" was 10,627,000 (51.9 % of the total female employees), which was larger than that of "full-time employees", 9,038,000 (44.1 %) (Fig. I-13).

In "Medical, Health Care and Welfare," the number of "those other than full-time employees" and "temporary employees" greatly increased.
By major industrial group, the number of "employees" was the highest in "Wholesale and Retail Trade" with 10,388,000, followed by "Manufacturing" with 8,987,000, "Services, N.E.C." with 7,126,000, and others.
The number of "full-time employees" was the highest in "Manufacturing" with 6,869,000, followed by "Wholesale and Retail Trade" with 5,335,000, "Services, N.E.C." with 4,018,000 and so on. On the other hand, the number of "those other than full-time employees" was the highest in "Wholesale and Retail Trade" with 4,785,000, followed by "Services, N.E.C." with 2,707,000, "Eating and Drinking Places, Accommodations" with 2,669,000 and so on. The number of "temporary employees" in "Services, N.E.C." was 401,000, followed by "Wholesale and Retail Trade" with 268,000, "Eating and Drinking Places, Accommodations" with 215,000, and others.
Compared with 2001, the number of "full-time employees" in the category of "regular employees" increased most in "Medical, Health Care and Welfare" by 545,000, followed by "Compounded Services" by 170,000, "Education, Learning Support" by 127,000 and so on. On the other hand, the number of "those other than full-time employees" increased most in "Services, N.E.C." by 539,000, followed by "Medical, Health Care and Welfare" by 516,000, "Wholesale and Retail Trade" by 151,000 and so on. The number of "temporary employees" also increased most in "Services, N.E.C." by 95,000, followed by "Medical, Health Care and Welfare" by 44,000, "Education, Learning Support" by 18,000, and others (Table I-24).

In "Eating and Drinking Places" and "Retail Trade," the percentage of part-timers was high in "regular employees."
In minor industrial groups with more than 100,000 persons engaged, the percentage of "those other than full-time employees" such as part-timers among "regular employees" was the highest in "Hamburger shops" at 93.3 %, followed by "Eating and drinking places, n.e.c." such as convenience stores at 80.9%, "Barbecue restaurants, only oriental restaurants" at 79.9 % and so on. Generally, the percentage of "those other than full-time employees" among "regular employees" was high in "Eating and Drinking Places" and "Retail Trade" (Table I-25).
