I-4 By Number of Persons Engaged
Both the number of establishments, and that of establishments with "more than 50 persons engaged" increased.
By number of persons engaged in private establishments, the number of establishments with "1-4 persons" was 3,487,000 (60.9 % of the total), followed by "5-9 persons" with 1,097,000 (19.2 %), "10-19 persons" with 623,000 (10.9 %), and others. The number of establishments with "less than 10 persons" thus covered about 80 % of the total.
Concerning the number of persons engaged, the establishments with "10-19 persons" had most person engaged, 8,374,000 (15.5 % of the total number), followed by 7,472,000 with "1-4 persons" (13.8 %), 7,146,000 with "5-9 persons" (13.2 %), and so on.
Compared with 2001, the number of establishments and that of persons engaged both increased in the establishments with "more than 50 persons," while they both decreased in those with "less than 50 persons." The number of establishments most decreased in the establishments with "1-4 persons" by 8.3 %, followed by "5-9 persons" by 6.7 %, "10-19 persons" by 3.0 %, and others. On the other hand, the number of establishments with "more than 300 persons" and "200-299 persons" increased by 9.4 % and 5.7 %, respectively. The number of persons engaged most decreased in the establishments with "1-4 persons" by 9.7 %, followed by "5-9 persons" by 6.5 %, "10-19 persons" by 2.7 % and so on, while it increased in those with "more than 300 persons" and "200-299 persons" by 9.0 % and 5.7 %, respectively (Table I-21, Fig. I-11).

By the number of persons engaged, the percentage of females was the highest in establishments with "1-4 persons" at 48.7 %, whereas the lowest was in "more than 300 persons" at 36.3 %. The percentage of females tends to fall as the number of persons engaged becomes larger (Table I-22, Fig. I-12).
