I-3 By Type of legal organization
The number of establishments in "Corporation" became higher than that in "Individual proprietorship" for the first time.
By type of legal organization, "private establishment" had 5,723,000 establishments (96.8 % of the total number), and "institutions of national and local public organizations" had 188,000 establishments (3.2 %).
Among private establishments, the number of establishments in "individual proprietorship" was 2,735,000 (46.3 %), whereas that in "corporation" was 2,955,000 (50.5 %), among which 2,571,000 establishments (43.5 %) were "Joint-stock company (including limited company)". The number of establishments in "corporation" became higher than that in "individual proprietorship" for the first time.
The number of establishments in "individual proprietorship" and that in "corporation" decreased by 12.7 % and 0.6 %, respectively, compared with 2001. The number of persons engaged was 54,184,000 in "private establishment" (92.4 % of the total), and 4,450,000 in "institutions of national and local public organizations" (7.6 %).
Among "private establishment," the number of persons engaged in "individual proprietorship" was 7,559,000 (12.9 %), whereas that in "corporation" was 46,495,000 (79.3 %), among which that in "stock company (including limited company)" was 39,539,000 (67.4%).
Compared with 2001, the number of persons engaged in "individual proprietorship" decreased by 16.1 %, while that in "corporation" increased by 1.6 % (Table I-18, Fig. I-9).

Concerning the Composition rate by sex and by type of legal organization, percentage of men was high in "incorporated administrative agencies, etc." (62.6 %), "Joint-stock company (incl. limited company)" (62.5 %), "foreign company" (59.9 %) and others, while that of women was high in "mutual insurance company" (84.5 %), "other corporations" (61.2 %), "institutions other than corporations" (55.7 %) and others (Table I-19, Fig. I-10).

In "individual proprietorship," "Wholesale and Retail Trade," "Eating and Drinking Places, Accommodations" and "Services, N.E.C." accounted for most establishments and persons engaged.
Concerning the composition rate of establishments by type of legal organization and by major industrial group for private establishments in non-agriculture, forestry and fisheries, "Wholesale and Retail Trade" accounted for 25.0 % in "individual proprietorship," followed by "Eating and Drinking Places, Accommodations" at 20.8 %, "Services, N.E.C." at 20.3 %, and so on. These three industrial groups accounted for 66.1 % of the total number of establishments in "individual proprietorship."
In "corporation," "Wholesale and Retail Trade" accounted for 31.2 %, followed by "Services, N.E.C." at 17.5 %, "Manufacturing" at 11.8 %, and so on.
Concerning the composition rate of persons engaged by type of legal organization and by major industrial group, "Wholesale and Retail Trade" accounted for 26.2 % in "individual proprietorship," followed by "Eating and Drinking Places, Accommodations" at 22.5 %, "Services, N.E.C." at 17.0 %, and so on. These three industrial groups accounted for 65.7 % of the total number of persons engaged in "individual proprietorship."
In "corporation," "Wholesale and Retail Trade" accounted for 22.4 % of the total, followed by "Manufacturing" at 20.2 %, "Services, N.E.C." at 15.3 %, and so on (Table I-20).
