Number of Migrants (Number of In-Migrants and Out-Migrants)
This number refers to migrants who crossed the boundary of local municipalities (including ku of ordinance-designated cities). It excludes those persons who moved within the boundary of a local municipality or whose previous addresses were unknown. The number also excludes persons whose period from out-migration to in-migration was one year or more. The monthly or annual number of migrants includes those persons who either reported their moves to the municipal offices or whose moves were registered ex officio during the respective report period, according to the provision of the Law of the Basic Resident Registers. Thus it reflects the number of reports, not necessarily of moves, during the report period. In addition, if a person moved more than once during the report period, each move was counted separately. Note that a move between two former local municipalities that have been annexed will not be reported if the move took place after the annexation.
Intra-prefectural migrants
Refer to those persons who in changing their addresses moved across municipality boundaries within the same prefecture.
Inter-prefectural migrants
Refer to those persons who in changing their addresses moved across prefectural boundaries.
In-migrants
Refer to those persons who moved into the municipality (prefecture) from other municipalities (prefectures).
Out-migrants
Refer to those persons who moved out of the municipality (prefecture) to other municipalities (prefectures). The number of out-migrants in this report was computed by the Statistics Bureau based on the previous addresses of in-migrants, and therefore was not necessarily equal to the number of persons who received out-migration certificates.
Net-migration
Net-migration was computed as the difference between in-migrants and out-migrants for each municipality (prefecture). In the statistical tables, "-" (minus sign) means that out-migration exceeds in-migration.
Rate of migration
Refers to the percentage of the number of migrants each category to the Japanese population estimated for Japan, each prefecture and each of the 21 major cities as of October 1 of the year. However, for the year of which last digit is 0 or 5, Japanese population is based on the Census results.
