NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The 1st Japanese Statistical Delegation to Vietnam

  The 1st Japanese Statistical Delegation to Vietnam headed by Mr. Masato CHINO, Director-General of Statistical Survey Department, Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) visited Vietnam from 27 February to 3 March 2017.

  They had discussions with Mr. Nguyen Van Lieu, Deputy Director-General of General Statistics Office (GSO) and the staff of GSO of Vietnam concerning "The latest SBJ and GSO outline and challenges" and "Using ICT for statistics."

  In addition, the delegation visited Da Nang Statistical Office and Thua Thien Hue Statistical Office, and exchanged information about statistical activities at the local level.

  The delegation is based on the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between GSO and SBJ, which was signed on January 14, 2015, to establish the basis for in depth cooperation between both sides in the area of statistics and other related fields of mutual interests.

  • Automobiles (new): up 16.4% in nominal terms and 16.6% in real terms
  • Mobile telephone (cell phone, PHS) charges: up 12.3% in nominal terms and 16.1% in real terms
  • Washing machines: up 1.5% in nominal terms and 13.7% in real terms

<Main Items decreased in real terms>

  • House-related equipping/ construction/ repair costs: down 42.7% in nominal terms and 43.3% in real terms
  • Package tour costs (overseas): down 16.2% in nominal terms and 21.5% in real terms
  • Video game hardware (excluding software): down 19.2% in nominal terms and 13.2% in real terms

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (February 2017)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 355,467, a decrease of 19,212 (5.1%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 152,860, a decrease of 7,440 (4.6%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 202,607, a decrease of 11,772 (5.5%) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 328,147, a decrease of 21,177 (6.1%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 139,219, a decrease of 8,727 (5.9%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 188,928, a decrease of 12,450 (6.2%) from the previous year.

"Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation)" (February 2017)

  • The number of employed persons in February 2017 was 64.27 million, an increase of 510 thousand or 0.8% from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in February 2017 was 1.88 million, a decrease of 250 thousand or 11.7% from the previous year.
  • The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.8%.

Consumer Price Index (2015-base) (February 2017, Japan / March 2017, Ku-area of Tokyo (preliminary))

  • The consumer price index for Japan in February 2017 was 99.8 (2015=100), up 0.3% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.1% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
  • The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in March 2017 (preliminary) was 99.5 (2015=100), down 0.4% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.2% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households: February 2017)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for February 2017 was 260,644 yen, down 3.4% in nominal terms and down 3.8% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 484,038 yen, up 1.1% in nominal terms and up 0.7% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 298,092 yen, up 0.1% in nominal terms but down 0.3% in real terms from the previous year.
