Conducting of the 2025 Census

The SBJ conducted the 2025 Census as of 12:00 a.m., October 1, 2025, starting to collect responses from September 20. The Census aims to provide a clear picture of the population and demographics of Japan, and has been conducted every five years since 1920. The 2025 Census is the twenty-second of its kind.
There were three ways to respond to the census: online, by mail, or by submitting the questionnaire to the enumerator. The SBJ encouraged households to respond online, which allows for responding with a smartphone or similar device at any time.
The SBJ will release the preliminary results by May 2026 and the final ones by September 2026.

Activities by Japan (MIC) for World Statistics Day

October 20, 2025, marks World Statistics Day (WSD) designated by the United Nations. WSD is celebrated every five years on October 20 to deepen understanding of official statistics. WSD 2025 will be the fourth WSD since its establishment in 2010.
To raise awareness of this day, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) of the Government of Japan, led by the Office of the Director-General for Policy Planning on Statistical Policy, is conducting a variety of lectures nationwide, mainly for students. Also, a meeting of the Inter-agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) established under the United Nations Statistical Commission will be held in Kitakyushu, Japan, in November.
Of particular note, the World Statistics Day Forum 2025 is to be held in December 2025 for domestic and international stakeholders in official statistics, featuring a keynote speech from the United Nations Statistical Division and presentations on various initiatives related to statistical and data utilization by Japan's national and local governments. The forum is to be broadcast online.
