The results of the Basic Tabulation on Dwellings and Households from the 2023 Housing and Land Survey were released
The SBJ released the results of the Basic Tabulation on Dwellings and Households from the 2023 Housing and Land Survey on September 25, 2024. This survey has been conducted every five years since 1948, and the 2023 survey marks the sixteenth of its kind.
These are the final results of the tabulation on the total number of dwellings and vacant dwellings, as well as the basic attributes of dwellings and households for the whole country, by prefectures and by municipalities with population of 15,000 or more.
- The total number of dwellings was 65,047 thousands, an increase of 4.2% from 2018, the highest ever.
- The number of vacant dwellings was 9,002 thousands, the highest ever. The percentage of vacant dwellings was also the highest ever at 13.8%.
- 42.7% of principal households include persons age 65 or older. Of these households, 32.1% were one-person household of a person age 65 or older.

Participants of the Training Course by UNSIAP visited SBJ
On October 11, 2024, nine participants of "Training Course on Theory and Practices in Official Statistics for Monitoring SDGs" by United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UNSIAP) visited the SBJ as part of the training course. They received lectures on "Outline of the Statistics Bureau," "Outline of Inter-Ministry Information System for Official Statistics and Online Survey System" and so on.

New release of the Statistical Handbook of Japan 2024
The Statistical Handbook of Japan 2024 is designed to provide a clear and coherent overview of present-day Japan through statistics. It includes statistical tables, figures, maps, and photographs to portray Japan from a variety of perspectives like demographics, economic and social trends, culture and all. This Handbook is published annually in September and the latest version is accessible at the following website.
