The second tabulation of the 2023 Annual Business Survey was released
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ), Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and the Research and Statistics Department (RSD), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry jointly and severally released the second tabulation of the 2023 Annual Business Survey (ABS) on July 26, 2024 which was conducted in June, 2023.
This survey is conducted in order to identify the structure of all industries, such as their added value, and contribute to improving the precision of the National Accounts Statistics, and to grasp the actual situation in the interim year of the Economic Census for Business Activity implemented every five years.
This second tabulation includes the results on enterprises, etc. of all industries for ABS (All Industry Enterprise), and the results on establishments of Manufacturing Industry for ABS (Manufacturing Establishment) following the first tabulation of the preliminary results. The SBJ published the former results.
<Summary of the Results of ABS (All Industry Enterprise)>
- The amount of sales in Japan in 2022 was 1,812.9543 trillion yen. Looking at the amount of sales by industry division, the amount of sales was the largest for "Wholesale and Retail Trade" at 508.9791 trillion yen, followed by "Manufacturing" at 453.5996 trillion yen.
- The amount of added value in Japan in 2022 was 323.6327 trillion yen. Looking at the amount of added value by industry division, the amount was the largest for "Manufacturing" at 81.4378 trillion yen, followed by "Wholesale and Retail Trade" at 48.3859 trillion yen.

The 32nd Chinese Statistical Mission to Japan
The 32nd statistical mission from China, headed by Ms. LIU Yuqin, Director-General, Office of Statistical Law Enforcement and Supervision, National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS), visited Japan from July 29 to August 2, 2024.
Following an exchange of greetings with the senior officials of the SBJ, they discussed several topics with the SBJ staff on "Statistical organization and system," "Legislation of big data application in statistics work," and "Demographic statistics" etc.
The mission visited Statistical Data Utilization Center in Wakayama Prefecture and discussed "Promotion of data utilization."
Furthermore, they visited Research and Statistics Division of Wakayama Prefectural Government and deepened their understanding on the statistical activities of local governments.
The NBS and the SBJ have been cooperating to dispatch and invite statistical missions almost every year since 1980. The main purpose of this program is to develop official statistics for both governments. The missions to date have discussed their experiences and challenges with regard to statistical issues, such as organization, surveys, tabulation and data provision, and circumstances of local statistical organizations.
