Results of the Survey of Research and Development was released
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) released the latest results of the Survey of Research and Development on December 15, 2023.
- R&D Expenditure
Japan's total expenditure on R&D during fiscal year (FY) 2022 stood at 20.70 trillion yen, a 4.9 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. This figure is the highest ever.
Expenditure on R&D as a percentage of GDP was 3.65 percent, a 0.09 percentage point increase from the previous fiscal year.
- Intramural expenditures on R&D by selected objective (3 fields)
R&D funds spent in the three areas positioned by the Japanese government as fundamental technologies to be strategically addressed were 272.5 billion yen for AI, 385.0 billion yen for Biotechnology, and 132.2 billion yen for Quantum technology.
This, in comparison to the previous fiscal year, reflects a 56.3% increase in AI, a 55.1% increase in Biotechnology, a 13.2% increase in Quantum technology. AI and Biotechnology of these three have increased significantly.
- R&D Personnel
As of 31 March 2023, the total number of researchers is 910,400, a 0.2 percent increase from the previous year. It has increased for seven consecutive years, making the highest ever.
The R&D expenditures in FY2022 per researcher was 22.74 million yen, a 4.6% increase from the previous fiscal year.
It has increased for two consecutive years.

New release of the Japan Statistical Yearbook 2024
The Japan Statistical Yearbook is a comprehensive and systematic compendium of basic statistical information of Japan covering wide-ranging fields such as land, population, economy, society and culture.
The yearbook covers many fields of statistics published by the government and private organizations.
This volume contains 30 fields, 543 tables, including outline of the survey and explanation of terms in each section.
As the statistical tables in the yearbook are available in English, it can be useful as a tool for introducing information on Japan.

Country Focused Training Course on Development of Time Use Survey and Statistical Methods (Including SDGs Indicators) Using IT for CAPMAS
9 officials from Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) of Egypt visited SBJ from 12 to 22 December. After courtesy call for the Director-General of the SBJ, they learned "Statistical report description method," "Outline of the recent result of Time Use and Leisure Activities Survey in Japan," "Overview of the Economic Census for Business Activity," "Outline of Annual Business Survey," "Operations, Analyses and Utilization of Statistics in Local Government" and several other topics. In addition, the officials from CAPMAS presented their statistical surveys and online surveys in Egypt and exchanged views with SBJ staff and others.
