New release of the Statistical Handbook of Japan 2021
The Statistical Handbook of Japan 2021 is a government publication offered in English, designed to provide a clear and coherent overview of present-day Japan through statistics. It provides statistical tables, figures, maps, and photographs to portray the current situation in Japan from a variety of perspectives, including demographics, economic and social trends, culture, and so on.
This Handbook is published annually in September and the latest version is accessible at the following website.

Population Estimates (April 1, 2021 (Final estimates), September 1, 2021 (Provisional estimates))
- As of April 1, 2021 (Final estimates)
- The total population was 125,417 thousand, a decrease of 513 thousand (0.41%) from the previous year.
- The population under 15 years old was 14,905 thousand, a decrease of 211 thousand (1.40%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 74,214 thousand, a decrease of 550 thousand (0.74%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 36,298 thousand, an increase of 248 thousand (0.69%) from the previous year.
- Japanese population was 122,901 thousand, a decrease of 523 thousand (0.42%) from the previous year.

- The total population was 125.21 million, a decrease of 0.54 million (0.43%) from the previous year.

Consumer Price Index (2020-base) (August 2021, Japan)
- The consumer price index for Japan was 99.7 (2020=100), down 0.4% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.2% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (August 2021)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 370,565, an increase of 969 (0.3%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 167,602, an increase of 602 (0.4%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 202,963, an increase of 367 (0.2%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 340,850, a decrease of 3,172 (0.9%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 151,750, a decrease of 2,625 (1.7%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 189,100, a decrease of 547 (0.3%) from the previous year.

- The number of employed persons was 66.93 million, an increase of 0.17 million from the previous year.
