The 2021 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities to be conducted
The Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities has been conducted every five years since 1976, and the 10th survey is scheduled to be conducted as of October 20, 2021.
Purpose
The survey aims to obtain comprehensive data on citizens' time allocation and leisure activities in order to clarify the current status of their lifestyles.
Points
The 2021 survey is expected to more accurately perceive the reality of lifestyles, including the following points:
- Status of gender equality and work-life balance
- Impact of changes in lifestyle due to the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on people?s social lives.
Survey method
The 2021 survey is scheduled to be conducted as of October 20, 2021. Respondents are asked to report their time use on appointed two consecutive days within the nine-day period from October 16 to 24.
The survey covers about 190,000 persons aged 10 and above in about 91,000 randomly-selected households.
Enumerators deliver questionnaires to each selected household, and collect completed questionnaires. Online response is also possible.
Topics to be surveyed
The 2021 survey covers the following topics:
- Time use over a single day (sleep, meals, work, learning, etc.)
- Participation in leisure activities during the past year (learning, self-education and training, volunteer activities, sports, hobbies and amusement, travel and excursions)
- Frequency of participation in leisure activities during the past year.
Release of the results
The 2021 Survey results will be released sequentially after September 2022.

- The consumer price index for Japan in July 2021 was 99.7 (2020=100), down 0.3% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.2% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

- The total population was 125,480 thousand, a decrease of 482 thousand (0.38%) from the previous year.
- The population under 15 years old was 14,925 thousand, a decrease of 205 thousand (1.35%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 74,283 thousand, a decrease of 530 thousand (0.71%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 36,271 thousand, an increase of 253 thousand (0.70%) from the previous year.
- Japanese population was 122,948 thousand, a decrease of 510 thousand (0.41%) from the previous year.

- The total population was 125.30 million, a decrease of 0.51 million (0.40%) from the previous year.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (July 2021)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 363,284, a decrease of 16,208 (4.3%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 165,076, a decrease of 3,919 (2.3%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 198,208, a decrease of 12,289 (5.8%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 334,781, a decrease of 18,700 (5.3%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 149,880, a decrease of 6,368 (4.1%) from the previous year.

- The number of employed persons in July 2021 was 67.11 million, an increase of 0.56 million from the previous year.
- The number of unemployed persons in July 2021 was 1.91 million, a decrease of 0.06 million from the previous year.
- The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.8%.

- Monthly sales: 29.9 trillion yen, up 3.0% over the year.

The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for July 2021 was 267,710 yen, up 0.3% in nominal terms and up 0.7% in real terms from the previous year. - Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 668,062 yen, down 2.6% in nominal terms and down 2.2% in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 302,774 yen, up 4.9% in nominal terms and up 5.3% in real terms from the previous year.
