New Director-General of the Statistics Bureau

On July 1, 2021, Mr. INOUE Takashi was appointed as the Director-General of Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ), succeeding Mr. SAIKI Shuji.
In his career, Mr. INOUE contributed to various statistical activities. Most recently, he served as the Director-General for Statistical Research and Training Institute, from April to July 2019. Furthermore, he also served as the Director-General, Statistical Survey Department of SBJ, from July 2019 to June 2021.
Preliminary Counts of the 2020 Population Census of Japan released
The Statistics Bureau of Japan released the Preliminary Counts of the 2020 Population Census of Japan on June 25, 2021. The Population Census has been conducted every five years since 1920 and the 21st Census was conducted in October 2020.
- Population of Japan
The total population of Japan as of October 1, 2020, was 126.227 million. Compared to 2015, the population of Japan continued to decline by 868 thousand (-0.7%).
- Population by prefecture
According to the population by prefecture in 2020, the population of Tokyo-to was largest (14.065 million). The population of the Tokyo metropolitan area, which consists of Tokyo-to, Kanagawa-ken, Saitama-ken and Chiba-ken, was 36.939 million, which accounts for about 30% (29.3%) of the population of Japan.
- Population by municipality
According to the population by municipality in 2020, the population decreased in 1,416 (82.4%) of the 1,719 municipalities in Japan.
- Households
The total number of households was 55.72 million, which increased by 2.271 million (4.2%) during the 2015-2020 period. The members per household was 2.27 and remained on a decline.
Hereafter, the release of the basic complete tabulation on population and households, results of the labour force status of population, industry and occupation of employed persons, place of work or schooling, internal migration and so on will follow in sequence.

- The consumer price index for Japan in May 2021 was 101.7 (2015=100), down 0.1% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.3% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

- The total population was 125,630 thousand, a decrease of 358 thousand (0.28%) from the previous year.
- The population under 15 years old was 14,979 thousand, a decrease of 182 thousand (1.20%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 74,437 thousand, a decrease of 463 thousand (0.62%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 36,215 thousand, an increase of 287 thousand (0.80%) from the previous year.
- Japanese population was 123,112 thousand, a decrease of 576 thousand (0.47%) from the previous year.

- The total population was 125.47 million, a decrease of 0.39 million (0.31%) from the previous year.
Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (May 2021)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 357,793, an increase of 56,932 (18.9%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 162,557, an increase of 31,669 (24.2%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 195,236, an increase of 25,263 (14.9%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 328,587, an increase of 49,107 (17.6%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 147,885, an increase of 27,247 (22.6%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 180,702, an increase of 21,860 (13.8%) from the previous year.

- The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in June 2021 (preliminary) was 101.9 (2015=100), the same level as the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.3% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation) (May 2021)
- The number of employed persons in May 2021 was 66.67 million, an increase of 0.11 million from the previous year.
- The number of unemployed persons in May 2021 was 2.11 million, an increase of 0.13 million from the previous year.
- The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 3.0%.

The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for May 2021 was 281,063 yen, up 11.5% in nominal terms and up 11.6% in real terms from the previous year. - Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 489,019 yen, down 2.7% in nominal terms and down 2.6% in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 317,681 yen, up 13.1% in nominal terms and up 13.2% in real terms from the previous year.
