NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) will conduct the Economic Census for Business Activity 2021
The SBJ, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will conduct the Economic Census for Business Activity as of June 1, 2021. The Economic Census for Business Activity aims to reveal the economic activities of establishments and enterprises in Japan at the national and regional levels by thoroughly investigating financial survey items such as sales (income) and expenses across all industries at the same point in time. Moreover, this survey also provides information on the population for various statistical surveys on establishments and enterprises.
[Coverage of the survey]
All establishments and enterprises in Japan excluding the establishments of individual proprietorships of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, etc.
[Major survey items]
(1) Survey for privately owned establishments
- Basic items: name and telephone number, location, type of establishment, number of persons engaged, main business activity, etc.
- Financial items: capital and ratio of foreign equity, sales (income), expenses, sales (income) by industry groups, etc.
(2) Survey for national and local governments
Basic items: name, location, number of persons engaged, main business activity.

- Distribution of questionnaire forms: May 20-31, 2021

<Survey by direct mailing (for enterprises with head and branch offices)>
- Distribution of questionnaire forms: mid to late May 2021

(2) Survey for national and local governments
- Distribution of questionnaire forms: mid to late May 2021
* Relevant authorities send questionnaire forms to each establishment by email. - Responding online: from June 1, 2021
[Release Dates]
(1) The preliminary results will be released by the end of May 2022.
(2) The detailed results will be released in sequence from September 2022.

Population Estimates (November 1, 2020 (Final estimates), April 1, 2021 (Provisional estimates))
- As of November 1, 2020 (Final estimates)
- The total population was 125,669 thousand, a decrease of 492 thousand (0.39%) from the previous year.
- The population under 15 years old was 15,009 thousand, a decrease of 184 thousand (1.21%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 74,453 thousand, a decrease of 606 thousand (0.81%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 36,207 thousand, an increase of 297 thousand (0.83%) from the previous year.
- Japanese population was 123,205 thousand, a decrease of 484 thousand (0.39%) from the previous year.

- The total population was 125.41 million, a decrease of 0.52 million (0.42%) from the previous year.
Consumer Price Index (2015-base) (March 2021, Japan)
- The consumer price index for Japan in March 2021 was 101.8 (2015=100), down 0.2% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.2% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (March 2021)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 975,925, an increase of 10,874 (1.1%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 535,867, an increase of 2,820 (0.5%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 440,058, an increase of 8,054 (1.9%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 915,925, an increase of 17,427 (1.9%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 501,748, an increase of 6447 (1.3%) from the previous year.

- The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in April 2021 (preliminary) was 101.4 (2015=100), down 0.6% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.4% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

- The number of employed persons in March 2021 was 66.49 million, a decrease of 0.51 million from the previous year.
- The number of unemployed persons in March 2021 was 1.88 million, an increase of 0.12 million from the previous year.

The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for March 2021 was 309,800 yen, up 6.0% in nominal terms and up 6.2% in real terms from the previous year. - Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 484,914 yen, down 1.2% in nominal terms and down 1.0% in real terms from the previous year.
