2019 National Survey of Family Income, Consumption and Wealth (Income and Expenditures)
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) conducts the National Survey of Family Income, Consumption and Wealth every five years, with the aim of clarifying income distribution as well as the level and structure of household consumption nationally and by region. This survey was renamed from the National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure conducted before 2014, with comprehensive improvements.
Among the results of the Survey conducted in 2019, items related to income and expenditure were released on February 26, 2021.
[Overview]
- Compared to the results of 2014, the expenditure ratio increased for items such as ?Food,? ?Housing,? and ?Medical care.?
- The ratio of ?Housing? expenditure in all expenditure is the highest among the age group of ?Under 30 Years? compared to other age groups, accounting for 24.1%.
- The expenditure amount for ?Education? among households with a household head who graduated from university is about 2.1 times larger than households with a household head whose highest level of academic achievement was graduation from senior high school
- Among consumption expenditure, the ratio of ?Credit card, installment, credit, Electronic Money? is the highest in Chiba Prefecture, accounting for 31.2%.
- The ratio of purchase via ?Mail-order selling (Internet)? is the highest in Tokyo Prefecture, accounting for 6.0%.
- The ratio of purchase in ?Other municipality (In other prefecture)? is the highest in Nara Prefecture, accounting for 19.1%.

Completion of the Project on Capacity Development for the Implementation of Economic Census 2018 in Nepal
?Project on Capacity Development for the Implementation of Economic Census 2018? in Nepal, which is one of the projects supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through Official Development Assistance (ODA) launched on March 6, 2016, was completed on March 5, 2021. The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) in cooperation with the Statistical Research and Training Institute (SRTI) and the National Statistics Center (NSTAC) supported the implementation of the first-ever Economic Census 2018 in Nepal. As for the details of the support, SBJ dispatched its officers as statistical experts to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Nepal for 24 times and also provided advice through the Internet. Furthermore, SBJ conducted four training courses in Japan for CBS officers. These activities contributed to enhancing the statistical capacity of the Government of Nepal.

- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 320,671, a decrease of 11,712 (3.5%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 143,489, a decrease of 6,007 (4.0%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 177,182, a decrease of 5,705 (3.1%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 281,919, a decrease of 16,611 (5.6%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 122,088, a decrease of 9,159 (7.0%) from the previous year.

Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation) (January 2021)
- The number of employed persons in January 2021 was 66.37 million, a decrease of 0.5 million from the previous year.
- The number of unemployed persons in January 2021 was 1.97 million, an increase of 0.38 million from the previous year.
- The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.9%.

The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for January 2021 was 267,760 yen, down 6.8% in nominal terms and down 6.1% in real terms from the previous year. - Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 469,254 yen, down 3.2% in nominal terms and down 2.5% in real terms from the previous year. The average of consumption expenditures per household was 297,629 yen, down 4.8% in nominal terms and down 4.1% in real terms from the previous year.
