Statistical Research and Training Institute signed partnership agreement with the Institute of Statistical Mathematics
The Statistical Research and Training Institute signed an agreement on partnership with the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Research Organization of Information and Systems, on December 1, 2020. Under the Master Plan Concerning the Development of Official Statistics (Cabinet Decision on June 2, 2020), it was decided to actively utilize joint research with external research institutes such as universities for research and development on advanced statistical techniques, and to improve training aimed to acquire knowledge on statistics, techniques, and statistical thinking. This agreement was concluded as a part of these efforts under the Plan.

Specific efforts will be promoted in order from FY2021 for the topics of partnership as shown below.
<Development of statistical professionals with advanced knowledge and skill>
- Recommend to trainees lectures and seminars held by the Institute of Statistical Mathematics on various themes, from the cutting-edge theory and methods of statistical science to the basics.
- Hold lectures given by professors of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics in the training course offered by the Statistical Research and Training Institute.
<Implementation of joint research on statistical techniques>
- Implement joint research on statistical techniques to contribute to the development of official statistics.
- Dispatch staff members from the Institute of Statistical Mathematics for the work of the overall control of research in the Statistical Research and Training Institute.

- As of August 1, 2020 (Final estimates)
- The total population was 125,809 thousand, a decrease of 410 thousand (0.32%) from the previous year.
- The population under 15 years old was 15,064 thousand, a decrease of 195 thousand (1.28%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 74,606 thousand, a decrease of 525 thousand (0.70%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 36,139 thousand, an increase of 310 thousand (0.87%) from the previous year.
- Japanese population was 123,334 thousand, a decrease of 546 thousand (0.44%) from the previous year.
- As of January 1, 2021 (Provisional estimates)
- The total population was 125.57 million, a decrease of 0.42 million (0.33%) from the previous year.

- The consumer price index for Japan in December 2020 was 101.1 (2015=100), down 1.2% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.1% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (December 2020)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 358,031, an increase of 6,968 (2.0%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 148,972, an increase of 1,143 (0.8%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 209,059, an increase of 5,825 (2.9%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 322,494, an increase of 10,562 (3.4%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 130,199, an increase of 3,053 (2.4%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 192,295, an increase of 7,509 (4.1%) from the previous year.

Annual Report on Internal Migration in Japan (2020)
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants was 2,463,992, down 4.1% from the previous year.
- Regarding the net-migration for prefectures, eight prefectures had positive net-migration in 2020. The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo-to, however, shrank most among these prefectures, compared to the previous year.
- The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo Area was 99,243, decreased by 49,540 persons from the previous year.
- 26.4% of municipalities in Japan had positive net-migration.
- As for Japanese migrants, Tokyo area had positive net-migration for the 25th consecutive year. Both Nagoya area and Osaka area had negative net-migration for the 8th consecutive year.

The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for December 2020 was 315,007 yen, down 2.0% in nominal terms and down 0.6% in real terms from the previous year. - Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 1,045,032 yen, down 2.7% in nominal terms and down 1.3% in real terms from the previous year. The average of consumption expenditures per household was 333,777 yen, down 3.4% in nominal terms and down 2.0% in real terms from the previous year.
