NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) published the Japan Statistical Yearbook 2021
The Japan Statistical Yearbook is a comprehensive and systematic compendium of basic statistical information of Japan covering wide-ranging fields such as land, population, economy, society and culture.
The yearbook covers many fields of statistics published by the government and private organizations.
This volume contains 30 fields and 541 tables, including an outline of the survey and explanation of terms.
As the statistical tables in the yearbook are available in English, it can be useful as a tool for introducing information on Japan.

- As of June 1, 2020 (Final estimates)
- The total population was 125,858 thousand, a decrease of 394 thousand (0.31%) from the previous year.
- The population under 15 years old was 15,089 thousand, a decrease of 198 thousand (1.29%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 74,670 thousand, a decrease of 509 thousand (0.68%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 36,099 thousand, an increase of 313 thousand (0.87%) from the previous year.

Japanese population was 123,370 thousand, a decrease of 504 thousand (0.41%) from the previous year.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (October 2020)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 370,201, a decrease of 22,467 (5.7%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 161,380, a decrease of 11,225 (6.5%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 208,821, a decrease of 11,242 (5.1%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 341,034, a decrease of 5,933 (1.7%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 146,586, a decrease of 3,002 (2.0%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 194,448, a decrease of 2,931 (1.5%) from the previous year.

- The number of employed persons in October 2020 was 66.94 million, a decrease of 930 thousand from the previous year.
- The number of unemployed persons in October 2020 was 2.15 million, an increase of 510 thousand from the previous year.

The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for October 2020 was 283,508 yen, up 1.4% in nominal terms and up 1.9% in real terms from the previous year. -
Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 312,334 yen, up 2.3% in nominal terms and up 2.8% in real terms from the previous year.
The average of monthly income per household stood at 546,786 yen, up 2.0% in nominal terms and up 2.5% in real terms from the previous year.

Results of the Survey of Research and Development (2020)
- R&D Expenditure
Japan's total expenditure on R&D during fiscal year (FY) 2019 stood at 19.58 trillion yen, a 0.3 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. It has increased for three consecutive years, the highest ever.
Expenditure on R&D as a percentage of GDP was 3.50 percent, a 0.01 percentage point decrease from the previous fiscal year. - R&D Personnel
As of 31 March 2020, the total number of researchers is 881,000, a 0.7 percent increase from the previous year. It has increased for four consecutive years, the highest ever.
The number of female researchers (Head Count) is 158,900, a 2.6 percent increase from the previous year. It also accounts for 16.9 percent of the total researchers. This figure is the highest ever. - Technology Balance of Payments
With regard to technology balance of payments by business enterprises, receipts from technology exports stood at 3.66 trillion yen, a decrease of 5.4 percent from the previous fiscal year. It has decreased for two consecutive years.
