Japan was reelected as a member country of the United Nations Statistical Commission
Japan was reelected as a member of the United Nations Statistical Commission by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Its term of office is four years, from January 2021 to December 2024.
About the membership of the Statistical Commission
The Statistical Commission, established under the ECOSOC in 1947, has supported the ECOSOC toward the development of statistics all over the world. 24 member countries of the Commission are elected among the member states of the UN by the ECOSOC. Japan has continuously served as its member since 1962, except for the period between 1970 and 1972.
Recently, two of the four seats from the Asia-Pacific States were reelected by the ECOSOC and Japan was elected together with the Independent State of Samoa.
Why being a member of the Statistical Commission is so important
Over the past few years, Japan has been committed to an active discussion on the global indicators for measuring the progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals at the Statistical Commission. At the 51st session of the Commission in March 2020, Mr. KAWASAKI Shigeru, a member of the Statistics Commission of the Japanese Government, headed the Japanese delegation and more importantly led its session as the Chairman. Taking the opportunity of this reelection, Japan will continue working to actively participate in the discussion about global issues surrounding statistics for further contribution to the international statistical community.
