NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) is to conduct the 2020 Census

The census is conducted once every five years in Japan in accordance with the Statistics Act, in order to provide a clear picture of the population and demographics of Japan. This time, the 2020 Census will be conducted as of October 1, 12:00 AM, 2020, covering all households and people usually living in Japan regardless of their nationality.

The 2020 Census marks the 100th anniversary since the first survey in 1920.

The data obtained by the census is widely utilized for administrative management in the central government and municipalities, and also academic research and business activities, etc.

The response data is only used for producing statistics and is not used for any other purposes such as immigration control or police investigation.

It is very much welcomed to respond to the census via the internet as far as possible to protect enumerators and households from COVID-19 infection. Mailing back the paper form is also an available method for response.

[The survey process]

From September 14th
Survey documents on how to respond to the 2020 Census will be delivered to each household.
September 14th - October 7th
Online participation via smartphones or PCs.
October 1st - 7th
Households that have not yet responded online are required to mail back the paper form.

* Handing it in to the enumerators is also an available method for response.

After the data is collected and processed, the preliminary results of the population and household counts at the national, prefectural and municipal levels will be released followed by detailed results by sex, age and so on (the final counts of the population and households).

July 20, 2020

Population Estimates (February 1, 2020 (Final estimates), July 1, 2020 (Provisional estimates))

- As of February 1, 2020 (Final estimates)

The total population was 126,004 thousand, a decrease of 305 thousand (0.24 %) from the previous year.
The population under 15 years old was 15,141 thousand, a decrease of 212 thousand (1.38 %) from the previous year.
The population aged 15 to 64 was 74,877 thousand, a decrease of 404 thousand (0.54 %) from the previous year.
The population aged 65 and over was 35,986 thousand, an increase of 311 thousand (0.87 %) from the previous year.

Japanese population was 123,550 thousand, a decrease of 508 thousand (0.41 %) from the previous year.

-As of July 1, 2020 (Provisional estimates)

The total population was 125.96 million, a decrease of 0.30 million (0.24 %) from the previous year.

The consumer price index for Japan in June 2020 was 101.7 (2015=100), up 0.1 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.1 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (June 2020)

The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 352,719, an increase of 1,325 (0.4 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 158,500, an increase of 2,019 (1.3 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 194,219, a decrease of 694 (0.4 %) from the previous year.
The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 328,543, an increase of 13,905 (4.4 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 146,690, an increase of 9,186 (6.7 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 181,853, an increase of 4,719 (2.7 %) from the previous year.

The number of employed persons in June 2020 was 66.70 million, a decrease of 770 thousand from the previous year.
The number of unemployed persons in June 2020 was 1.95 million, an increase of 330 thousand from the previous year.
The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.8%.

The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in July 2020 (preliminary) was 102.1 (2015=100), up 0.6 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.3 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households
The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for June 2020 was 273,699 yen, down 1.1 % in nominal terms and down 1.2 % in real terms from the previous year.
Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 1,019,095 yen, up 15.7 % in nominal terms and up 15.6 % in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 298,367 yen, down 3.3 % in nominal terms and down 3.4 % in real terms from the previous year.
