NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) will conduct the Unincorporated Enterprise Survey

The Unincorporated Enterprise Survey has been conducted since 1952 with the aim of clarifying the actual conditions of business management for unincorporated enterprises. This survey is a Fundamental Statistical Survey, which is designated as particularly important by the Statistics Act, and has been conducted as of June 1 every year since 2019. (Before 2018, the survey had been conducted every quarter and year as a survey by enumerators via prefectures.)

This survey covers approximately 40,000 unincorporated establishments throughout Japan and collects data on business proprietors and persons engaged, problems in managing business, annual operating income and expenses, and so on.

The results of the survey are used as basic data for the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises in the national and local governments, as well as for the analysis of various projects and policies, and for the estimation of the National Accounts (GDP statistics).

Survey date: As of June 1 of each year

Coverage: Establishments of unincorporated enterprises in all industries excluding agriculture, forestry and fisheries

Survey items: Items on business proprietors and persons engaged, annual operating income and expenses, items on inventories and investment in plants and machinery, problems in managing business, etc.

Survey flow: SBJ - Private survey agency - Surveyed establishments

Survey method: The questionnaires are distributed to unincorporated enterprises by mail. Responses to the survey are conducted by mail or online

Data provision: Published by March of the next survey year on the internet, etc. (However, the results of the survey conducted in 2019 will be released in December 2020.)

Population Estimates (November 1, 2019 (Final estimates), April 1, 2020 (Provisional estimates))

- As of November 1, 2019 (Final estimates)

The total population was 126,161 thousand, a decrease of 292 thousand (0.23 %) from the previous year.
The population under 15 years old was 15,193 thousand, a decrease of 206 thousand (1.34 %) from the previous year.
The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,059 thousand, a decrease of 399 thousand (0.53 %) from the previous year.
The population aged 65 and over was 35,910 thousand, an increase of 313 thousand (0.88 %) from the previous year.

Japanese population was 123,689 thousand, a decrease of 493 thousand (0.40 %) from the previous year.

The total population was 125.96 million, a decrease of 0.30 million (0.24 %) from the previous year.

The consumer price index for Japan in March 2020 was 101.9 (2015=100), up 0.4 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and the same level as the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan (March 2020)

The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 965,051, an increase of 55,044 (6.0 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 533,047, an increase of 39,443 (8.0 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 432,004, an increase of 15,601 (3.7 %) from the previous year.
The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 898,498, an increase of 48,629 (5.7 %) from the previous year.
The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 495,301, an increase of 35,156 (7.6 %) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 403,197, an increase of 13,473 (3.5 %) from the previous year.

The number of employed persons in March 2020 was 67 million, an increase of 130 thousand from the previous year.
The number of unemployed persons in March 2020 was 1.76 million, an increase of 20 thousand from the previous year.
The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.5%.

Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households
The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for March 2020 was 292,214 yen, down 5.5 % in nominal terms and down 6.0 % in real terms from the previous year.
Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 490,589 yen, up 2.0 % in nominal terms and up 1.5 % in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 322,461 yen, down 7.6 % in nominal terms and down 8.1 % in real terms from the previous year.
