NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

New charts have been added to the Statistics Dashboard!

  The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) is continuously putting effort into providing statistical data that is easy to use, in order to contribute in improving statistical literacy and promoting the utilization of statistical data.
  The SBJ added the charts to the Statistics Dashboard, a website offering major statistical data in a visually easy-to-understand manner, and started its provision.

  • New chart: Population Pyramid
      The chart has been added to display the population pyramid of the area that you want to know in chronological order.
      You can easily understand the demographic changes and the future population size, and use it for the aging and the regional revitalization measures.

  • New chart: Time series change of the world data
      The chart has been added to display the data of G20 on the world map.
      It can help you understand international comparisons and time series changes.

  • The total population was 126.01 million, a decrease of 0.30 million (0.24 %) from the previous year.

- As of September 1, 2019 (Final estimates)

<Total Population>

  • The total population was 126,131 thousand, a decrease of 285 thousand (0.23 %) from the previous year.
  • The population under 15 years old was 15,228 thousand, a decrease of 203 thousand (1.31 %) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 15 to 64 was 75,046 thousand, a decrease of 394 thousand (0.52 %) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 65 and over was 35,857 thousand, an increase of 312 thousand (0.88 %) from the previous year.

  • Japanese population was 123,775 thousand, a decrease of 484 thousand (0.39 %) from the previous year.

  • The consumer price index for Japan in January 2020 was 102.2 (2015=100), up 0.7 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and the same level as the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (January 2020)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 332,383, a decrease of 3,820 (1.1 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 149,496, a decrease of 1,519 (1.0 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 182,887, a decrease of 2,301 (1.2 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 298,530, a decrease of 3,955 (1.3 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 131,247, a decrease of 2,095 (1.6 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 167,283, a decrease of 1,860 (1.1 %) from the previous year.

  • The number of employed persons in January 2020 was 66.87 million, an increase of 590 thousand from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in January 2020 was 1.59 million, a decrease of 70 thousand from the previous year.
  • The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.4%.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households: January 2020)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households
    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for January 2020 was 287,173 yen, down 3.1 % in nominal terms and down 3.9 % in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers? Households
    The average of monthly income per household stood at 484,697 yen, up 2.9 % in nominal terms and up 2.1 % in real terms from the previous year.
    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 312,473 yen, down 4.1 % in nominal terms and down 4.9 % in real terms from the previous year.
