NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The 2nd Statistical Delegation from Mongolia visited the Statistics Bureau of Japan

  The 2nd Statistical delegation from Mongolia, headed by Mr. Tsevegdorj Chimedtseren, Director of Administration department, National Statistics Office of Mongolia (NSO), visited SBJ from January 29 to February 4, 2018, to learn Japanese experiences in how to increase the use of statistics among users, what kind of approaches that SBJ uses to the public for efficient data dissemination, and how to improve the data dissemination methods.

  During the visit, they exchanged greetings with the senior officials of SBJ, and were given information on several topics by the SBJ staff: Outline of the Statistics Bureau, Portal Site of Official Statistics (e-Stat) and Statistics in Maps (Statistical GIS), System of Online Population Census 2015, Promotion of Use of Statistical Data through Statistics Dashboard, and Japan's Efforts to Promote Secondary Use of Official Statistical Data, etc.

  On February 2, they paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Kenji HARADA, Former State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications who visited Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in May 2017, and Mr. Toshihiko WAKO, Vice-Minister for Policy Coordination for Internal Affairs and Communications.

  Their visit is based on the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between NSO and SBJ, which was signed on February 9, 2017, to establish the basis for in depth cooperation between both sides in the area of statistics and other related fields of mutual interests.

  • The consumer price index for Japan in December 2017 was 101.2 (2015=100), up 1.0 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.2 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
  • The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in January 2018 (preliminary) was 100.8 (2015=100), up 1.3 % over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.4 % from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (December 2017)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 341,345, an increase of 6,904 (2.1 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 140,922, an increase of 5,563 (4.1 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 200,423, an increase of 1,341 (0.7 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 308,919, an increase of 1,392 (0.5 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 124,343, an increase of 1,998 (1.6 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 184,576, a decrease of 606 (0.3 %) from the previous year.

"Annual Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (2017)

  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants has increased for the first time since 2015.
  • The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo-to increased for the first time since 2015. The number of negative net-migration for Fukushima-ken increased by 2,556 persons.
  • The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo Area increased for the first time since 2015. Nagoya Area and Osaka Area had negative net-migration for the fifth straight year.
  • More than 70 percent of municipalities in Japan had negative net-migration.
  • Iwate-ken, Miyagi-ken and Fukushima-ken had negative net-migration.

  • The unemployment rate was 2.8 %, a 0.3 point decrease from the previous year. The number of unemployed persons was 1.90 million, a decrease of 180,000 from the previous year.
  • The number of employed persons was 65.30 million, an increase of 650,000 from the previous year.
  • The employment rate was 58.8 %, a 0.7 point increase from the previous year.
  • The number of regular employees was 34.32 million, an increase of 560,000 from the previous year. The number of non-regular employees was 20.36 million, an increase of 130,000 from the previous year.
  • Those not in the labour force were 43.82 million, a decrease of 500,000 from the previous year.

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for December 2017 was 322,157 yen, up 1.2 % in nominal terms but down 0.1 % in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 940,875 yen, up 1.7 % in nominal terms and up 0.4 % in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 352,076 yen, up 0.8 % in nominal terms but down 0.5 % in real terms from the previous year.
