NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

2016 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities (Results on time use) released

  The SBJ conducted the 2016 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities as of October 20, 2016, and released the results concerning time use on September 15, 2017.

  The Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities aims to obtain comprehensive data on daily patterns of time allocation and on leisure activities. The following is an outline of the results on time use.


  • For wives in household with children of age under 6 years old, housework time decreased by 1 hour and 1 minute, while time for child care increased by 1 hour and 2 minutes, during the past 20 years.
  • Among households with children, hours spent by wives in "Households where both husband and wife are working" are unchanged for work and work-related activity and have decreased for housework, while increasing by 37 minutes for child care during the past 20 years.
  • Average time spent for participants for caring or nursing by caregivers (those who are 15 years old or above and take care of their family daily) are generally unchanged among males and generally decreasing among females. In 2016, the hours were 2 hours 32 minutes among males and 2 hours 28 minutes among females, so it was longer among males for the first time.
  • Among elderly persons 65 years old and above, those of a one-person household (persons living on their own) spend most of the time in a day (11 hours 18 minutes) alone.
  • Among those who used smartphones and personal computers, those who them used 12 hours a day or more accounted for 1 million 532 thousand, which is 2.3% of the total. Among those aged 20 - 24, 7.1% use them 12 hours a day or more.

  • Video Game hardware (excluding software): up 261.4% in nominal terms and 287.8% in real terms
  • TV: up 30.1% in nominal terms and 33.4%in real terms
  • Automobiles (new): up 18.0% in nominal terms and 17.6% in real terms

[Main Items decreased in real terms]

  • House-related equipping/ construction/repair costs: down 15.1 % in nominal terms and 15.2% in real terms
  • Package tour costs (domestic): down 12.7% in nominal terms and 13.7% in real terms
  • Women's one-piece dresses and suits: down 6.2% in nominal terms and 5.3% in real terms

  • The population aged 65 and over was 34,898 thousand, an increase of 600 thousand (1.75 percent) from the previous year.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (August 2017)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 383,375, a decrease of 13,251 (3.3 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 173,897, a decrease of 7,516 (4.1 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 209,478, a decrease of 5,735 (2.7 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 350,068, a decrease of 16,055 (4.4 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 157,072, a decrease of 8,901 (5.4 %) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was192, 996, a decrease of 7,154 (3.6 %) from the previous year.

  • The number of employed persons in August 2017 was 65.73 million, an increase of 840 thousand or 1.3% from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in August 2017 was 1.89 million, a decrease of 230 thousand or 10.8% from the previous year.

Consumer Price Index (2015-base) (Japan August 2017, Ku-area of Tokyo September 2017(preliminary))

  • The consumer price index for Japan in August 2017 was 100.3 (2015=100), up 0.7% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.2% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
  • The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in September 2017 (preliminary) was 100.2 (2015=100), up 0.5% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.1% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households: August 2017)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for August 2017 was 280,320 yen, up 1.4% in nominal terms and up 0.6% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 485,099 yen, up 1.0% in nominal terms and up 0.2% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 301,574 yen, remain unchanged in nominal terms but down 0.8% in real terms from the previous year.
