2017 Employment Status Survey

The SBJ will conduct the Employment Status Survey on October 1, 2017.

The Employment Status Survey has been conducted every three years between 1956 and 1982 and every five years since 1982. The 2017 Employment Status Survey will be the 17th one.

- Purpose of the survey

The Employment Status Survey aims to obtain basic data on the actual conditions of the employment structure at both the national and regional levels by surveying the normal labour force status in Japan.

- Coverage of the survey

In the designated enumeration districts, this survey was conducted on 1.08 million household members 15 years old or older in approximately 520,000 households living in sampled units (a unit is defined as a building or part of a building capable of housing one household). These units are selected by the mayors of cities, the mayors of towns and village heads in the manner prescribed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
The following persons, however, were excluded from the survey.

  • A. Foreign diplomatic corps or consular staff (including their suites and family members)
  • B. Foreign military personnel or civilians (including their family members)
  • C. Persons dwelling in camps or on ships of the Self-Defense Forces
  • D. Persons serving sentences in prisons or detention houses
  • E. Inmates of reformatory institutions or women's guidance homes

- Items surveyed

  • A. All household members
Sex, year and month of birth, educational status, whether providing childcare, whether providing family care, etc.
  • B. Persons engaged in work
Employment contract term, contents of work, working hours per week, reason for taking the present job, etc.
  • C. Persons not engaged in work
Whether wishing to work, kind of job wished for, whether seeking a job, etc.

- Survey method

The enumerators appointed by the governors of prefectures or the mayors of cities, the mayors of towns and village heads distribute questionnaires to each household to be surveyed and the completed questionnaires are collected by the enumerators or via the internet.

- Release of the results

The survey results will be released by the end of July 2018 via the internet and other media.
