NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

2016 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities (Results on leisure activities) released

  The SBJ conducted the 2016 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities as of October 20, 2016, and released the results concerning leisure activities on July 14, 2017.

  The Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities aims to obtain comprehensive data on daily patterns of time allocation and on leisure activities. The following is an outline of the results on leisure activities within the past year (from October 20, 2015 to October 19, 2016).


- Learning, self-education and training

  The percentage in the population of those aged 10 and over (hereinafter referred to as "participation rate") was 36.9%. Compared to 2011, the participation rate increased by 1.7 percentage points. By age group, the participation rate increased particularly in those from their teens to 30s.
  The participation rate of "English language" increased particularly in the teens and was over 30%.


- Volunteer activities

  The participation rate of "Volunteer activities" was 26.0%. Compared to 2011, the participation rate decreased by 0.3 percentage points. By age group, the highest participation rate was found in the age group of 40 to 44 years old, and the lowest rate in the age group of 25 to 29 years old.
  Compared to 2011, the participation rate of "Local improvement activities" increased by 0.4 percentage points and "Disaster-related activities" decreased by 2.3 percentage points.
  The participation rate of "Disaster-related activities" decreased by 2.3 percentage points compared to 2011 when the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred, while it increased 0.3 percentage points compared to 2006.


- Hobbies and amusements

  The participation rate of "Hobbies and amusements" was 87.0% and increased by 2.2 percentage points compared to 2011. By age group, the highest participation rate was found in the age group of 10 to 14 years old. The higher the age group, the lower the rate, generally speaking.
  The participation rate of "Watching movies in a movie theater" and "Watching movies other than movie theater (TV PGMs, DVDs and PCs etc.)" particularly increased.
  The participation rate of "Playing home use video games or PC games (including use of portable game machines)" increased particularly in the age group of 40s and 50s.

Unincorporated Enterprise Survey (Structural survey) 2016 Yearly

  • The sales per establishment of "Manufacturing" were 10,461,000 yen; "Wholesale and retail trade," 14,895,000 yen; "Accommodations and food services," 8,532,000 yen; and "Services," 5,063,000 yen. From the previous year, the sales per establishment of "Manufacturing" and "Services" increased; and "Wholesale and retail trade" and "Accommodations and food services" decreased.
  • The rate of establishments with the business proprietor aged 60 and over was 76.2% in "Manufacturing," 76.3% in "Wholesale and retail trade," 71.1% in "Accommodations and food services," and 67.9% in "Service."

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for June 2017 was 268,802 yen, up 2.8% in nominal terms and up 2.3% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 735,477 yen, up 0.6% in nominal terms and up 0.1% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 296,653 yen, up 7.2% in nominal terms and up 6.7% in real terms from the previous year.
