New Director-General of the Statistics Bureau

News Bulletin No.273 Picture of New Director-General of the Statistics Bureau

  On July 11, 2017, Mr. Masato CHINO was appointed as Director-General of the Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ), succeeding Mr. Masato AIDA.

  In his career, Mr. Chino has been engaged in a number of statistical related activities, including serving as Director, Survey Planning Division, SBJ, from July 2009 to July 2010, and as Director-General, Statistical Survey Department, SBJ, from July 2015 to July 2017.




The International Student from Samoa for Pacific Leaders' Educational Assistance for Development of State (Pacific-LEADS) Program visited the SBJ

  Mr. Asera Asera from Samoa, the international student of Graduate School of Science and Technology, Kumamoto University visited the Statistics Bureau of Japan as a part of the Pacific-LEADS Program by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on 14 July 2017.
  In this program, selected government officials from 14 Pacific Islands Countries (Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Nauru, Cook Islands and Niue) are invited to Japan as international students. This program offers not only education in master's courses at Japanese universities but internship opportunities in national or local government in Japan as well as other organizations with a view to foster young leaders who play a vital role towards the resolution of development challenges in their countries, as well as to further strengthen the relationships between their countries and Japan.
  He received explanations from the SBJ staff on "Outline of the Statistics Bureau of Japan", "Outline of the Population Census", and "e-Stat (Portal site of Official Statistics of Japan) and dissemination of statitical information".

  • Water supply and drainage construction costs: up 138.7% in nominal terms and 135.4% in real terms
  • Automobiles (new): up 40.6% in nominal terms and 40.5% in real terms
  • Washing machines: up 2.3% in nominal terms and 17.6% in real terms

  • Vacuum cleaners: down 14.8% in nominal terms and 23.9% in real terms

  • The population aged 15 to 64 was 76,385 thousand, a decrease of 687 thousand (0.89 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 65 and over was 34,699 thousand, an increase of 654 thousand (1.92 percent) from the previous year.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (May 2017)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 405,155, an increase of 14,401 (3.7%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 185,067, an increase of 6,965 (3.9%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 220,088, an increase of 7,436 (3.5%) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 370,835, an increase of 10,160 (2.8%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 168,075, an increase of 4,765 (2.9%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 202,760, an increase of 5,395 (2.7%) from the previous year.

Tabulation on Place of Work or Schooling for Population and Labour Force of the 2015 Population Census

  • The ratio of daytime population to nighttime population

    The ratio of daytime population to nighttime population by prefecture (proportion of the daytime population per 100 persons of nighttime population) is the highest in Tokyo-to (117.8), and is the lowest in Saitama-ken (88.9).

    The ratio of daytime population to nighttime population by municipalities (i.e. shi, ku, machi and mura) is the highest in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo-to (1460.6), and is the lowest in Shichigahama-machi, Miyagi-ken (68.6).

"Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation)" (May 2017)

  • The number of employed persons in May 2017 was 65.47 million, an increase of 760 thousand or 1.2% from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in May 2017 was 2.10 million, a decrease of 70 thousand or 3.2% from the previous year.
  • The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 3.1%.

Consumer Price Index (2015-base) (May 2017, Japan / June 2017, Ku-area of Tokyo (preliminary))

  • The consumer price index for Japan in May 2017 was 100.4 (2015=100), up 0.4% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and the same level as the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
  • The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in June 2017 (preliminary) was 99.8 (2015=100), the same level as the previous year before seasonal adjustment, and the same level as the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households: May 2017)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for May 2017 was 283,056 yen, up 0.4% in nominal terms but down 0.1% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 421,497 yen, down 1.2% in nominal terms and down 1.7% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 315,194 yen, up 2.8% in nominal terms and up 2.3% in real terms from the previous year.
