The preliminary result from the 2016 Economic Census for Business Activity released
On 31 May 2017, the SBJ and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) released the preliminary results from the 2016 Economic Census for Business Activity.
The objectives of the Economic Census for Business Activity are, by investigating the economic activity of establishments and enterprises, to identify the structure of establishments and enterprises in all industries on a national and regional level, and to obtain basic information for conducting various statistical surveys.
As for this survey, accounting matters, including the amount of sales (income) (hereinafter referred to as "sales") and expenses, are the values for the year 2015, whereas matters other than accounting matters, including the number of establishments, "enterprises, etc." and persons engaged, are the values as of June 1, 2016.
- The amount of sales in Japan was 1603.4638 trillion yen (up by 20.1% from 2011), and that of added value was 294.7949 trillion yen (up by 20.5%).
- As of June 1, 2016, the number of "enterprises, etc." in Japan was 3,866,537 (down by 6.3% from February 1, 2012). The number of establishments was 5,622,238 (down by 2.5%), and the number of persons engaged was 5,744 ten thousand (up by 2.9%).
- Looking at sales by industrial division, the largest were for "Wholesale and retail trade" at 489.6754 trillion yen (30.5% of all industries), followed by "Manufacturing" at 411.6184 trillion yen (25.7%), and "Finance and insurance" at 123.8868 trillion yen (7.7%), resulting in the top three industries accounting for over 60% of all industries. The sales arising from "Tertiary industries" accounted for 67.0% of all industries.
- Looking at the amount of added value by industrial division, the amount was the largest for "Manufacturing" at 73.4762 trillion yen (24.9% of all industries), followed by "Wholesale and retail trade" at 53.5629 trillion yen (18.2%), and "Construction" at 21.0272 trillion yen (7.1%), resulting in the top three industries accounting for over 50% of all industries. The added value arising from "Tertiary industries" accounted for 67.4% of all industries.

Unincorporated Enterprise Survey (Trend survey) (January to March 2017)
- The sales per establishment for January-March 2017 increased by 1.5% in "Manufacturing ", decreased by 6.9% in "Wholesale and retail trade",10.6 % in "Accommodations and food services" and 0.3% in "Services", respectively over the previous year (corresponding period).
- The net operating profit per establishment for January-March 2017 decreased by 11.7% in "Manufacturing", 18.7% in "Wholesale and retail trade", 11.0% in "Accommodations and food services", 0.5% in "Services" respectively over the previous year (corresponding period).

- The consumer price index for Japan in April 2017 was 100.3 (2015=100), up 0.4% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.1% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in May 2017 (preliminary) was 100.1 (2015=100), up 0.2% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.2% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (April 2017)
- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 749,778, an increase of 18,191 (2.5%) from the previous year.

- The number of employed persons in April 2017 was 65.00 million, an increase of 800 thousand or 1.2% from the previous year.
- The number of unemployed persons in April 2017 was 1.97 million, a decrease of 280 thousand or 12.4% from the previous year.
The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.8%.

Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households
The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for April 2017 was 295,929 yen, down 0.9% in nominal terms and down 1.4% in real terms from the previous year.
Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 472,047 yen, down 1.7% in nominal terms and down 2.2% in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 329,949 yen, down 2.4% in nominal terms and down 2.9% in real terms from the previous year.
