NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

Basic Complete Tabulation on Labour Force of the 2015 Population Census of Japan released

  The Basic Complete Tabulation on Labour Force of the 2015 Population Census of Japan was released on April 26, 2017.
  Based on the results of the complete count of questionnaires, the tabulation includes statistics on the status of population of the labour force, and on industry and occupation of employed persons and of households of parents and child(ren).

- Population by Age

  The population aged 15 to 64 totaled 76,288,736 and continued to decrease from its peak in 1995, declining 5.9% from 2010.

- Population in Labour Force

  The labour force participation rate among males decreased consecutively from 2010, while the rate among females increased.

- Employment Status

  "Regular employees" was the highest for males (64.9% of employed males aged 15 and over), and "Part-time employees and others" was the highest for females (43.4% of employed females aged 15 and over).

- Industry and Occupation

  The proportion of "Medical, healthcare and welfare" increased consecutively from 2010.
  The proportion of "Professional and engineering workers" continued increasing from 2000 and the proportion of "Sales workers" continued decreasing from 2000.

- Labour Force Status of Couples

  The number of households with a couple who are both employed persons was 13,080,450 (47.6% of the total private households with a couple).

- Industry and Occupation of Employed Foreigners

  As for the proportion of employed foreigners aged 15 and over by industry, "Manufacturing" was the largest for both males and females.
  As for the proportion of employed foreigners aged 15 and over by occupation, "Manufacturing process workers" was the largest for both males and females.

  • Water supply and drainage construction costs: up 33.8% in nominal terms and 30.9% in real terms
  • Washing machines: up 2.5% in nominal terms and 13.0% in real terms
  • Automobiles (new): up 2.6% in nominal terms and 2.9% in real terms

[Main Items decreased in real terms]

  • Package tour costs (overseas): down 25.2% in nominal terms and 28.6% in real terms
  • Personal computers (including tablet devices, excluding peripherals and software): down 24.9% in nominal terms and 16.7% in real terms

"Current Population Estimates" (As of October 1st, 2016)

  • The total population was 126,933 thousand, a decrease of 162 thousand compared with the previous year. The migration change of the Japanese population was negative for the sixth year in a row, and that of the foreign population was positive for the fourth year.
  • The population aged 65 years old and over was 34,591 thousand (27.3 percent of the total population).
  • The population increased in 7 prefectures, while it decreased in 40 prefectures.

  • The population under 15 years old was 15,760 thousand, a decrease of 169 thousand (1.06 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 15 to 64 was 76,545 thousand, a decrease of 688 thousand (0.89 percent) from the previous year.
  • The population aged 65 and over was 34,633 thousand, an increase of 699 thousand (2.06 percent) from the previous year.

  • Japanese population was 124,990 thousand, a decrease of 301 thousand (0.24 percent) from the previous year.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (March 2017)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 958,776, an increase of 12,942 (1.4%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 512,776, an increase of 3,964 (0.8%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 446,000, an increase of 8,978 (2.1%) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 905,589, an increase of 4,918 (0.5%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 483,751, a decrease of 757 (0.2%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 421,838, an increase of 5,675 (1.4%) from the previous year.

  • The number of employed persons in March 2017 was 64.33 million, an increase of 690 thousand or 1.1% from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in March 2017 was 1.88 million, a decrease of 280 thousand or 13.0% from the previous year.
  • The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 2.8%.

  • The consumer price index for Japan in March 2017 was 99.9 (2015=100), up 0.2% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.1% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
  • The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in April 2017 (preliminary) was 100.0 (2015=100), down 0.1% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.2% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households: March 2017)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for March 2017 was 297,942 yen, down 1.0% in nominal terms and down 1.3% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 445,607 yen, down 1.1% in nominal terms and down 1.4% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 337,075 yen, up 0.7% in nominal terms and up 0.4% in real terms from the previous year.
