NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The 27th Japanese Statistical Mission to Korea

  The 27th Japanese Statistical Mission to Korea headed by Mr. Tamotsu MIZUKAMI, Vice President, National Statistics Center (NSTAC), visited Korea from 13 to 18 February 2017.

  They had discussions with the staff of Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) concerning the Population Census, data processing and tabulation (Time Use Survey of Japan), Changing in Work Style.
  In addition, the mission visited Busan Metropolitan City, and exchanged information about statistical activities at the local level with the staff of Dongnam Regional Statistics Office.

  Japan and Korea have been exchanging statistical missions with each other almost every year since 1982. The missions aim to develop official statistics for both countries, and have served as opportunities for interoffice discussions on their experiences and challenges with regard to a wide range of statistical issues, such as: organization, surveys, data processing & provision, and circumstances of local statistical organizations.

Training Course for Beginners on Statistics Being Opened on YouTube

  The Statistical Research and Training Institute has recently started providing an on-line training course titled "Statistics for Beginners-Online Course for Government Officials-" to the world on YouTube.

  To contribute to the dissemination and improvement of statistical literacy on a worldwide scale, the Institute has produced English versions of lecture slides and subtitles from a course which had originally been developed in Japanese and released for domestic use in 2016.

  The course provides basic statistical knowledge focusing on how to read and use data as well as going back to how to collect them. All lecturers are selected from those currently directly working on the production, coordination, or provision of official statistics or related education.
  Each chapter is composed of approximately five lecture videos. By following the five chapters, you will gain basic knowledge on statistics. Each lecture is short-about ten-minutes long-so it is easy to take the course.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (2016 Yearly Average)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The yearly average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for 2016 was 282,188 yen, down 1.8% in nominal terms and down 1.7% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The yearly average of monthly income per household stood at 526,973 yen, up 0.2% in nominal terms and up 0.3% in real terms from the previous year.

    The yearly average of monthly consumption expenditures per household was 309,591 yen, down 1.8% in nominal terms and down 1.7% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Mobile telephone (cell phone, PHS) charges: up 7.9% in nominal terms and 10.3% in real terms

Unincorporated Enterprise Survey (Trend survey) (October to December 2016)

  • The sales per establishment for October-December 2016 increased by 7.5% in "Manufacturing ", decreased by 6.0% in "Wholesale and retail trade",8.3 % in "Accommodations and food services" and 6.6% in "Services", respectively over the previous year (corresponding period).
  • The net operating profit per establishment for October-December 2016 increased by 6.8% in "Manufacturing" and decreased by16.3% in "Wholesale and retail trade", 17.7% in "Accommodations and food services", 9.3% in "Services" respectively over the previous year (corresponding period).

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (January 2017)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 321,162, an increase of 5,060 (1.6%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 141,475, an increase of 1,978 (1.4%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 179,687, an increase of 3,082 (1.7%) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 294,816, an increase of 2,463 (0.8%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 128,274, an increase of 198 (0.2%) from the previous year.

  • The number of employed persons in January 2017 was 64.70 million, an increase of 460 thousand or 0.7% from the previous year.
  • The number of unemployed persons in January 2017 was 1.97 million, a decrease of 140 thousand or 6.6% from the previous year.
  • The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 3.0%.

  • The consumer price index for Japan in January 2017 was 100.0 (2015=100), up 0.4% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.1% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
  • The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in February 2017 (preliminary) was 99.4 (2015=100), down 0.3% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and down 0.1% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for January 2017 was 279,249 yen, down 0.6% in nominal terms and down 1.2% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 441,064 yen, up 1.6% in nominal terms and up 1.0% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 307,150 yen, down 1.7% in nominal terms and down 2.3% in real terms from the previous year.
