Signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Statistics Bureau of Japan and the National Statistics Office of Mongolia
On February 9, Ms. Ariunzaya Ayush, Chair of the National Statistics Office of Mongolia (NSO) and 2 statistical officials from NSO visited SBJ to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between SBJ and NSO.
Mr. Masato Aida, Director-General of SBJ, and Ms. Ariunzaya Ayush, Chair of NSO, had a meeting, and agreed to establish the basis for in depth cooperation between SBJ and NSO in the area of official statistics and signed the MOC.
The purpose of the MOC is to establish the basis for in depth cooperation between both sides in the area of statistics and other related fields of mutual interest. The main fields of collaboration are;
- Conducting censuses and surveys (Population and Housing Census, Economic Census, Family Income and Expenditure Survey, Survey for Consumer Price Index, and so on);
- Preparing statistical reports;
- Statistical Analysis and Forecast;
- Geographic Information System (GIS) and Portal Site of Official Statistics (e-Stat); and
- Using official statistical information.
During the discussion held in SBJ after signing the MOC, they recognized the importance of interaction and had discussion towards further promotion of interaction between both countries in the future.
On February 13, the NSO's delegation paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Kenji Harada, the State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications.

High-level government officials from Egypt visit Japan
High-level government officials from Egypt, headed by Ms. Ghada Mostafa Abdalla, Under Secretary for President Affairs, Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), visited Japan from the end of this January.
After exchanging greetings with the senior officials of the SBJ and the Office of the Director-General for Policy Planning (Statistical Standards) (DGPP-(SS)), they discussed the 'Population Census,' 'Labour Force Survey,' ' 2016 Economic Census for Business Activity,' ' e-Stat,' and 'Grid Square Statistics' with the SBJ staff, and discussed the 'Statistical Law System' with the DGPP-(SS) staff.
On February 2, the Egyptian officials paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Saburo SHIMADA, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications. They discussed the situation surrounding statistical activities in both countries with Mr. SHIMADA.
SBJ has cooperated with JICA's Project for developing a statistical quality system at CAPMAS since 2016. The main purpose of this project is to improve the quality of statistical studies in Egypt. This visit of the CAPMAS executives is one of the activities on the above project.

- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 334,441, a decrease of 16,990 (4.8%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 135,359, a decrease of 6,982 (4.9%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 199,082, a decrease of 10,008 (4.8%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 307,527, a decrease of 17,945 (5.5%) from the previous year.

"Annual Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (2016)
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants has decreased for the first time since 2014.
- The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo-to decreased for the first time since 2011. The number of negative net-migration for Fukushima-ken increased by 3,444 persons.
- The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo Area decreased for the first time since 2011. Nagoya Area and Osaka Area had negative net-migration for the fourth straight year.
- More than 70 percent of municipalities in Japan had negative net-migration.
Iwate-ken, Miyagi-ken and Fukushima-ken had negative net-migration. The number of negative net-migration for Fukushima-ken has increased for the second straight year.

Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households
The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for December 2016 was 318,488 yen, up 0.1% in nominal terms but down 0.3% in real terms from the previous year.
Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 924,920 yen, up 2.7% in nominal terms and up 2.3% in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 349,214 yen, up 2.6% in nominal terms and up 2.2% in real terms from the previous year.
