Preliminary Sample Tabulation of the 2015 Population Census of Japan released

  The Preliminary Sample Tabulation of the 2015 Population Census of Japan was released on June 29, 2016.
  The tabulation using sample households was carried out to offer preliminary results on the basic characteristics of the population and households including sex, age, labour force status, industrial and occupational structure, etc. The sampling ratio for this tabulation was about one percent.


- Population

  The total population of Japan as of October 1, 2015, was 127.11 million. During the 2010-2015 period, the population of Japan declined by 947 thousand (0.7%), or by 189 thousand (0.15%) per year. It declined for the first time since the Population Census was begun in 1920.
  Broken down by sex, the male population numbered 61,829 thousand (48.6% of the total population) and the female population numbered 65,281 thousand (51.4%).
  The population under 15 years old was 15,864 thousand (12.7% of the total population), those aged 15 to 64 totaled 75,918 thousand (60.6%), and those aged 65 years old and over numbered 33,422 thousand (26.7%).
  The percentage of the population aged 65 and over increased from 23.0% to 26.7%.
  The percentage of the population aged 65 years old and over is the highest since the Population Census was begun in 1920.
  The percentage of the population aged 65 years old and over in Japan is 26.7%, which is the highest in the world, followed by Italy (22.4%) and Germany (21.2%).


- Employed persons

  The labour force participation rate among males decreased consecutively, while the rate among females increased.
  The labour force participation rate among persons aged 15 years old and over was 59.8%, down by 1.4 points from 2010.
  The rate for males was 70.8%, down by 3.0 points from 2010 while the rate among females was 49.8%, up by 0.2 points.
  The rate for females aged 25 to 29 was 80.9%, exceeding 80% for the first time among comparable census results since 1950.
  Regarding the percentage of employed persons aged 15 years old and over by industry (major groups), "Wholesale and retail trade" was the biggest, at 16.5%, followed by "Manufacturing," at 15.7%, and "Medical, health care and welfare," at 12.2%.
  The percentage of "Medical, health care and welfare" increased consecutively, up by 2.0 points from 2010.


- Households

  The number of private households was 51,877 thousand, the average size of a private household was 2.39 and decreased consecutively from 2010.
  The number of one-person households was 16,845 thousand, the largest category, and exceeded 30% among private households.
  The number of "aged-single-person" among the population aged 65 years old and over was 5,626 thousand. The percentage of "aged-single-person" among the population aged 65 years old and over had consecutively risen from 2010-those aged 65 years old and over were 16.8%.
  The percentage of "aged-single-person" among the population aged 65 years old and over had risen-those aged 65 years old and over were 12.5% for males and 20.1% for females, indicating the fact that one out of 8 males and one out of 5 females were living alone.
  The number of people who live as "inmates of social institutions" was 1,685 thousand. This is approximately 1.4 times the number in 2010.

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (May 2016)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 390,754, an increase of 30,633 (8.5%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 178,102, an increase of 16,462 (10.2%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 212,652, an increase of 14,171 (7.1%) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 360,675, an increase of 26,304 (7.9%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 163,310, an increase of 14,210 (9.5%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 197,365, an increase of 12,094 (6.5%) from the previous year.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households: May 2016)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for May 2016 was 281,827 yen, down 1.6% in nominal terms and down 1.1% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 426,805 yen, down 0.8% in nominal terms and down 0.3% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 306,721 yen, down 3.3% in nominal terms and down 2.8% in real terms from the previous year.

  • The number of employed persons in May 2016 was 64.46 million, an increase of 460 thousand or 0.7% from the previous year.

Unincorporated Enterprise Survey (Structural survey) 2015 Yearly

  • The sales per establishment of "Manufacturing" were 9,994,000 yen; "Wholesale and retail trade," 15,650,000 yen; "Accommodations and food services," 9,457,000 yen; and "Services," 4,888,000 yen. From the previous year, the sales per establishment of "Manufacturing" and "Accommodations and food services" increased; and "Wholesale and retail trade" and "Services" decreased.
  • The rate of establishments with the business proprietor aged 60 and over was 76.3% in "Manufacturing," 72.5% in "wholesale and retail trade," 67.8% in "Accommodations and food services," and 66.5% in "Service."
